"Beat L.A." did not have to do with the Dodgers. It originated in Boston, when the Sixers were obviously going to win, the Garden audience chanted "Beat L.A.", as the Lakers are the basketball equivalent to the Yankees in this city.GreatGatsby 07:37, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

Inherently Subjective Qualities of This Article

This very topic is inherently subjective, and if the whole of Wikipedia feels that it does not deserve deletion, then it should at least be merged into the Red Sox Nation article. Checking this article right now, I suddenly noticed a completely subjective note written by a Mets fan, attracted by the ridiculous title of this article: "Yankees Suck." This is not an important enough phrase or chant that it requires it's own page, and it is watering down the quality of Wikipedia's sports-related articles. Djdickmutt 19:45, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Usefulness of Page

Is this subject worthy of its own article? While "Yankees Suck" is a common phrase, it's not as if they are the only group to use the expression that their rival team "sucks" as a battle cry. In theory, based on this article, Wikipedia should contain an article for any sort of cheer or jeer that has entered popular mythos, but that simply isn't feasible... I'd rather not see scores of articles named "___ Sucks." To me, it seems that its content could easily be merged with Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry. (For what it's worth, I hate the Yankees too, so my thoughts are not based out of bias against the subject matter!) --Kinu 20:34, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

Merge

I agree with Kinu and feel that this subject is not worthy of its own article and would be better placed in Red Sox Nation. Standing on its own it seems more like a jab at the NY Yankees than an article about a marketing fad. Any thoughts?

I disagree on this, since the chant is used everywhere, often completely out of context of a Sox/Yanks game. The fact that the chant has been heard at Patriots games and college football games gives it additional relevance as its own phenomenon. Most importantly, the Yankees are universally hated, and the use of this cheer, while patented by the Nation, is welcomed for use by others and is being heard with increasing frequency among non RSN members. In doing so, those two words practically embody the struggle against evil and world domination. Plus, many people (disclaimer: Myself included) find its repeated use to have pysical and psychological healing properties, putting it up there with the great mantras of all time. And its just plain fun to say.

I disagree as well. I'm not sure you're from Boston or not, but the whole "Yankees Suck" thing took on quite a regional significance. Bumper stickers, t-shirts, entire blocks of talk radio discussion, plus the fact that it was rare to spend a day at Fenway without hearing it at least once. It's definitely not just a Red Sox fans' phenomenon. ;-) There are quite a few people who take part in it that don't like the Yankees or the Red Sox. While the Red Sox are the Yankees' primary rival, the Yankees certainly have their haters in the Baltimore/Washington area, and (I'd assume) other MLB cities as well. --Idont Havaname 14:11, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Merchandising phenomenon. There is a ton of "Yankees Suck" stuff sold, as noted in the article, from bumper stickers (own one myself), to t-shirts and more. -

As I already said in the other post mentioning a merge, the rivalry is the biggest (in terms of media attention) in American sports. It's probably the most significant chant in baseball, and arguably in American professional sports.

"Yankees Suck" is not just a phrase or battle cry, its a way of life. It deserves its own page. Also, "Yankees Suck" is not only used by the Red Sox Fans, many fans of other teams use it too!

Sorry guys. It doen;t deserve it's own page. Significant in view of the Yanks-Sox rivalry, but it is just a chant. How many chants have their own pages? There are literally hundreds in several sports, but they only have significance in a certian light. Anyway, this article is very poor, with no mention of first known use or anything historical. Delete or incorporate into a Red Sox-related article.

It's not a chant it's a mantra; learn the difference before commenting on something you know nothing about. And don't claim to be the last word with your sorry ass "sorry guys" patronizing tone.

They're from the Boston Globe. Just type in some fake Massachusetts library card number- 14 numbers or thereabouts- and you should be able to read them. Stilgar135 17:18, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

edit: alright, I see your problem. The main page is http://mblc.state.ma.us/books/magazine/newspapers.php. Put in a number, select "databases by subject", choose "Boston Globe" from near the bottom of the list, and search for "Yankees Suck" and "Nick Cafardo" for the first reference, "Yankees Suck" and "Mets" for the second. I just remembered the second is actually from the Herald. Type in "ejection" or "arrest" or something. I know this is a bit of work, but these are absolutely real references from two very respected media sources. Stilgar135 17:23, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
