Abductive recently prodded this article and Phil Bridger subsequently reverted on the justification that there is a biography of the subject cited in the article. However, it's unclear whether this is really sufficient in this case. A WorldCat search shows that this bio (published 16 years ago) is held by only 16 instituions world-wide. For comparison, the vanity-published book "Off the Wall" (which has been discussed here before) is held by more than 4 times as many. The article doesn't offer much else that clearly demonstrates notability. It probably should be brought to AfD if additional material cannot be found. It needs to be expanded to include his important pupils. If none can be mentioned, there is little evidence of notability. JFW | T@lk 20:43, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Even if he had notable pupils, notability cannot be claimed because it cannot be WP:INHERITED. For example, Oprah's 6th grade teacher (whomever that might have been) is not notable simply for being such. I think the burden rather lies with furnishing WP:RS that show why he is notable. My point is that the above-mentioned book that has been named as such a source may only exist in the form of a handful of copies worldwide and that even vanity-published books (which are not regularly considered reliable) are more widely held. I think that observation raises some legitimate doubt about the book and, consequently, about the subject himself. Respectfully, Agricola44 (talk) 21:35, 15 January 2010 (UTC).Reply
  • Support AfD. I have seen the book but not read it; it appears to me that this entire article is based on the book. While Reb Mendel may have been a wonderful role model for his students, Chabad's Rabbi Mendel Kaplan of Florida seems to take up all the Google hits[1]. When I type in "Yisrael Mendel Kaplan", I get a series of Wikipedia mirror sites.[2] And what about that template at the bottom of the page with all the red links? I think that has to go, too.
