Overview: Yuzuru Hanyu article series

Assessment status of the series

edit

Now that Hanyu has launched his professional career as a skater and ice show producer, his biography article will probably to undergo various changes in terms of content and structure. Hanyu is expected to be active for another decade or more, doing shows and being present in the media. To keep his biography at reasonable length, more sub-articles are in the making, expanding the series to 12 articles in total:

Main series

To have a proper overview of the full series, a separate task force page has been launched, including a detailed to-do list and manual of style. A long-term goal is to improve the full series to a featured topic, with a consistent structure, formatting, and close interlinking between the single articles.

Note: The {{Yuzuru Hanyu series}} template has been merged into the infobox to have the sub-page links as far at the top of the article as possible and to make them accessible in mobile view as well. In addition, the navigation box {{Yuzuru Hanyu}} has been added at the bottom of each page.

Maintenance status of the main biography

edit
  • Current readable prose size: 62 kB
  • Desired readable prose size: below 50 kB

We need to consider that any crucial future event needs to be mentioned in Hanyu's biography article, so we need to calculate some "buffer" space and keep the article as flexible as possible for future additions. This is the most important criterion that stands above all other decisions.

Lead section discussion

edit

To the Wiki group on Twitter and @Yolo4A4Lo: The clean-up of the prose sections has not been finished yet, but independent from that I suggest to revamp and update the lead now. The current one is mostly a plain list of Hanyu's medals and records and misses many important information about the rest of his career, especially his latest achievements as a professional skater and philantropic contributions. Since the lead of the main biography is what most casual readers check first, it is very important that it's up-to-date and includes everything what the general public needs to know. However, I didn't want to make big changes without everyone's consent, so I decided to list up all points here first that I think should be covered in the prose with new content marked in green:

Figure skating career and legacy:

  1. Regarded as one of the greatest figure skaters in history for his well-rounded skills, achievements, innovations, popularity, and impact on the sport
  2. First back-to-back Olympic champion in men's singles in 66 years, youngest and first Asian male single skater to win the Olympics
  3. Two-time World champion, six-time national champion, and first single skater to win four consecutive Grand Prix Finals
  4. First male single skater to complete the Super Slam (this already includes 4CC, JWC, and JGPF titles)
  5. 19 world records, the most among single skaters in IJS era
  6. First skater to land a quadruple loop jump
  7. Hanyu's move to professional level in 2022 marking "end of an era in competitive figure skating" (Nikkei)
  8. First skater to produce and present a solo ice show (Prologue) and a solo tour (Repray Tour)
  9. First skater to perform at Tokyo Dome (Gift) with a new ice show audience record of 35,000 spectators
  10. Created a new entertainment and performing art genre with his Ice Story series, weaving figure skating programs into comprehensive, philosophical stories with on-screen narration

Philanthropy and author works:

  1. Experienced the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in his hometown of Sendai, which fundamentally shaped his life and career
  2. Participated in different charity events and dedicated various performances to the victims of the disaster
  3. Chairs annual commemoration event Yuzuru Hanyu Notte Stellata since 2023
  4. Donated a cumulative total of more than 3 million US dollars for reconstruction and disaster prevention
  5. Wrote best-selling autobiography series Blue Flames I–IV
  6. Published multiple compilation and photo books that made it to the Oricon top 10 charts of best-selling books
  7. Written picture book GIFT in collaboration with Clamp

Awards, honors, and rankings:

  1. First figure skater and youngest recipient of the People's Honor Award and recipient of the Kikuchi Kan Prize
  2. Firs figure skater to be nominated for a Laureus Award and named ISU Most Valuable Skater
  3. Featured in Forbes' 30 Under 30, ESPN World Fame 100 and Dominant 20
  4. Ranked 6th among most-searched athletes on Google worldwide in 2022

Here is a first draft. What do you think about this content selection and structure? I'm always open for suggestions Henni147 (talk) 20:22, 16 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

This is a good structure, but the part "established a new genre of performing art and entertainment, weaving figure skating programs into comprehensive, philosophical stories with on-screen narration" needs sources, especially since we can't find time in the article itself. - Yolo4A4Lo (talk) 01:19, 18 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Yolo4A4Lo: Yes, I want to improve the pro career section today and add the missing information with sources. I have found 2-3 good ones from reliable publishers. Henni147 (talk) 07:38, 18 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Note: Lead revamp has been discussed with Yuzuru Hanyu task force members Apqaria (talk · contribs) and Marika yuzu (talk · contribs) in external chat. The sources for the attendance of Hanyu's Ice Story series and total donations will be added shortly. Henni147 (talk) 07:46, 17 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
