What animal(s) ate their seeds? The seeds are quite large. Toxic coating? Does digestion promote germination? FloridaArmy (talk) 02:02, 18 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

IFAS says the seeds are eaten by jays and other large birds, and by small mammals.[1] This paper (p.284) says that the sarcotesta, the fleshy coating of the seeds of cycads, has been reported to be barely toxic. There may be better sources out there. Instructions for germinating coontie seeds include removing the sarcotesta and scratching the surface of the bare seeds. I don't know if jays have gravel in their craws like chickens do, or if they swallow the seeds, which seems to be very large for a bird that size to swallow, but that might be a way for the seeds to be scarified. I would definitely need to find a good source supporting that. Donald Albury 13:25, 18 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've found a couple of sources that may help. - Donald Albury 22:36, 18 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
