Before turning Astro list redirect comment into an article about the minor-planet-observing astronomer, observatory or program, or person after whom a minor planet was named, please check whether the content will satisfy the guidelines for notability on biographies. In particular, all content must be sourced from independent, reliable sources. Just because the astronomer has discovered or co-discovered some minor planets does not mean they are notable. |
Description
This template, Astro list redirect comment
is used on all redirects of minor-planet discovering astronomers, observatories and programs, including both observing astrometricist and photometrists, who are often, but not always, discoverers of minor planets and/or their companions. These astronomers and observatories – often amateurs and private, respectively – typically do not merit a stand-alone biography article due to lack of notability, or, there is simply not enough information available for a stub. The
message box ensures that editors can see the message prior to editing the redirect page.
Redirect targets
- If the astronomer is also a discoverer, the redirect should point to the corresponding entry in the List of minor planet discoverers.
- If the astronomer is not a discoverer, but has a minor planet named after them, the redirect should target the corresponding naming citation given in one of the partial lists of the Meanings of minor planet names.
- For discovering observatories and programs with MPC/IAU code and other minor-planet observing astronomers (photometrists) their private observatory listed in List of observatory codes may be targeted.
Features
- The comment box emphasizes these notability issues early on. It is thought to reduce the workload on administrators and editors at WP:SOLAR, as a large number of these articles have been deleted in the past.
- Deletion logs for some redirects from previously deleted pages

- This template also includes the standard templates for a redirect to an anchored list, which are displayed in a formatted manner after the above comment box.
Usage
- Primary redirects
Astro list redirect comment
produces the following comment and text describing the redirect.
Before turning article name here into an article about the minor planet discovering astronomer, please check whether the content will satisfy the guidelines for notability on biographies. In particular, all content must be sourced from independent, reliable sources. Just because the astronomer has discovered or co-discovered some minor planets does not mean they are notable. |
- Secondary redirects
For secondary redirects on alternative versions of the discovering astronomer's name, use:

. This replaces the default comment above with:
Do not categorize this secondary redirect, to avoid duplication. |
In addition, secondary redirects always display a R avoided double redirect and other appropriate templates (see § Example).
Default redirect templates
The default minor planet redirect templates, R to anchor, R to list entry, and R unprintworthy are all automatically included.
The default R-templates can be turned off using |r-templates=off
Non-standard redirect templates
If/when adding additional templates to individual redirects, please add them above Astro list redirect comment
, maintaining the blank line. This will put the non-standard R-template(s) at the top of the page, separating them from the standard R-templates below, making them easier to see.
Examples
This redirect example is for the Czech amateur astronomer Jan Karel Mánek (born 1961), who is credited by the Minor Planet Center with the discovery of one numbered asteroid only. A secondary #R exists for Jan Manek and uses the parameter |do-not-cat=
, to avoid redundant categorization.
- Primary #R
#REDIRECT List of minor planet discoverers#J. Manek Astro list redirect comment
- Secondary #R
#REDIRECT List of minor planet discoverers#J. Manek
This secondary #R also uses R to diacritics, while others may need R from short name for a versions with an abbreviated first name.
- Observatories and programs
#REDIRECT List of observatory codes#A77 Astro list redirect comment
The target of redirects of minor-planet observing and discovering observatories and programs such as astronomical surveys and collaborations, should point to the List of observatory codes with its MPC/IAU-code as an anchor (in the example above the code is (A77)).
