Usage

This template is used to cite cases decided by the courts of Canada available in the Canadian Legal Information Institute (CanLII) database. You should look up the case you wish to cite on CanLII, then refer to the URL of the web page on which the case appears to fill in the information required by the template.

Parameters

All parameters are optional unless otherwise specified.

Parameter	Description
Case name
litigants	The names of the litigants separated with v or v. for versus (in other words, the case name), like this: "R. v. Oakes".
link	The name of a Wikipedia article about the case, for example: "R. v. Oakes". This will be linked to the names of the litigants specified using the |litigants= parameter.
CanLII link: https://www.canlii.org/[en or fr]/[country]/[court]/doc/[year]/[year][court][num]/[year][court][num].html
year	Mandatory: the year of the decision. Alternatively, you can omit the parameter name |year= and type the year of the decision as the first unnamed parameter after the template name (see the examples below).
court or source	Mandatory in some cases: the code indicating the court which issued the decision, as follows: Federal courts fca: Federal Court of Appeal. fct: Federal Court. scc: Supreme Court of Canada. scc-l: Supreme Court of Canada – applications for leave to appeal. tcc: Tax Court of Canada. Yukon Territory ykca: Court of Appeal of the Yukon Territory. yksc: Supreme Court of Yukon. yktc: Territorial Court of Yukon. For decisions with a neutral citation in the form "1986 CanLII 46" (the URL will be in the form "https://www.canlii.org/en/ca/scc/doc/1986/1986canlii46/1986canlii46.html"), you must also add the |format= parameter like this: "format=canlii". The |court= or |source= parameter may be omitted if the court code is "scc". The template currently only handles cases decided by the above courts. Please update the template if you wish to include additional courts, or leave a message on the talk page if you need help with this.
num	Mandatory: the case number. Alternatively, you can omit the parameter name |num= and type the case number as the second unnamed parameter after the template name (see the examples below).
format	Mandatory in the following cases: If a case has a neutral citation in the form "1986 CanLII 46" (the URL will be in the form "https://www.canlii.org/en/ca/scc/doc/1986/1986canlii46/1986canlii46.html"), type: "|format=canlii". For Federal Court cases with a URL in the form "https://www.canlii.org/en/ca/fct/doc/2003/2003fct817/2003fct817.html" (the letters "fct" appear twice towards the end of the URL; in more recent cases, the letters are "fc"), type: "|format=1". See the Yee v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration) example below.
Other information
pinpoint	The page or paragraph number at which information or a quotation you are referring to appears, like this: "528", "p. 528" or "para. 25". When referring to a range of pages or paragraph numbers, separate the starting and ending numbers with an en dash like this: "528–530".
date	The date that the case was decided. You may enter the date in any format accepted by the template {{date}}, such as "9 October 1998" or "1998-10-09". It will appear in a day-month-year format.
parallelcite	Parallel citations to the case. Separate the citations with commas, like this: "[2006] 1 S.C.R. 256, 264 D.L.R. (4th) 577".
courtname	The court that decided the case. The name of the court can be wikilinked, like this: "[[Supreme Court of Canada|S.C.]]". To have the template automatically indicate the court and jurisdiction of a case, type "courtname=auto".
juris	The jurisdiction that decided the case, such as "Canada". It is unnecessary to use this parameter if you are already using "courtname=auto".
