This is a documentation subpage for Template:Cite Shiji. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
This template is a Citation Style 1 specific-source template based on {{Cite book}}. For centralised Citation Style 1 discussions, see Help talk:Citation Style 1. |
This template can be used to cite the monumental history of early China, Shiji.
Usage
editThe template defaults to the punctuated version of the 1739 edition, the Neifu Kanben (內府刊本), located at 史記 at the Chinese Wikisource. This version is substantially identical to the Siku Quanshu edition. It's not clear which modern reprint's punctuation was adopted. The template also supports citing the annotated 《史記三家注》 with the |zhu=
flag, q.v.
Parameters
editApart from accepting and passing to {{Cite book}} all the parameters used by that template, Cite Shiji accepts the following custom parameters:
[unnamed parameter]
: numeric value of 卷 ('chapter'; 'volume') cited. Used to generate chapter link. If this parameter is provided and|trans-chapter=
is left blank, the template will default to Vol. NN as the chapter link text. Valid range is 1–130; no bounds checking performed.|anchor=
: used to generate chapter link to page anchor (subheading) at the Wikisource target page of the unannotated Shiji. This goes directly into the URL, and should match exactly the Chinese text of the target subheading, or it will have no effect. Only the unannotated version uses page anchors.
Flags
editThe following boolean flags take effect if they are set to any value (including false
, no
, 0
, etc.):
|comma=
: when set to any value, will change the presentation of the author names from the default Sima Qian; Sima Tan to the Western-style comma-separated Sima, Qian; Sima, Tan.|sole=
: removes Sima Tan from authorship credits, especially useful for parts of the book it is certain he had no involvement in.|zhu=
: for 注 ('annotation'), this flag will cite the annotated critical edition《史記三家注》, incorporating the 集解 of Pei Yin (裴駰), the 索隱 of Sima Zhen, and the 正義 of Zhang Shoujie (張守節), composited in the mid-1800s by Zhang Wenhu (張文虎), and republished in 1959 by Zhonghua Shuju as the modern critical standard. The chapter link for this edition uses the Chinese Wikisource version at 史記三家註.|lp=
: short for "link publisher", this flag will link the|publisher=
to our article Imperial Household Department or Zhonghua Shuju depending on version cited. Combining this parameter with a custom publisher may cause unexpected output.
Use with shortened footnotes
editThis template overwrites the default |ref=
value, for multiple reasons. The 1739 and 1959 editions are the sources of the digitised Wikisource versions linked by default, but displaying 1739 or 1959 in shortened footnotes gives a misimpression of modernity around the date of authorship, in actuality both uncertain and over two millennia ago. Additionally, the default behaviour uses |author1=
|author2=
to avoid linking the semicolon between the author names as would be the case using |author1-mask=
|author2-mask=
. Thus, the default |ref=
if not modified by the template would be Sima Qian|Sima Tan|1739
.
To avoid this compound infelicity, if no |comma=
value is provided, the |ref=
for shortened footnotes is ''Shiji''
. If |comma=
is specified, the default becomes Sima|Sima
or Sima
if |sole=
is set.
Examples
editSimple case, citing a full chapter:
{{Cite Shiji|115}}
→ Sima Qian; Sima Tan (1739) [90s BCE]. "Vol. 115". Shiji 史記 [Records of the Grand Historian] (in Chinese) (punctuated ed.). Beijing: Imperial Household Department.
Citing one subsection of a chapter, providing a translation for the linktext:
{{Cite Shiji
| 102 | anchor= 馮唐
| trans-chapter= Vol. 102, biography of Feng Tang}}
→ Sima Qian; Sima Tan (1739) [90s BCE]. "Vol. 102, biography of Feng Tang". Shiji 史記 [Records of the Grand Historian] (in Chinese) (punctuated ed.). Beijing: Imperial Household Department.
Citing a subsection with translation, setting author names in comma-separated form, overriding the default title translation, and linking the publisher:
{{Cite Shiji
| 7 | anchor= 項羽
| trans-chapter= 7: Basic Annals of Xiang Yu
| comma= y
| lp = true
| trans-title= The Grand Scribe's Records
}}
→ Sima, Qian; Sima, Tan (1739) [90s BCE]. "7: Basic Annals of Xiang Yu". Shiji 史記 [The Grand Scribe's Records] (in Chinese) (punctuated ed.). Beijing: Imperial Household Department.
Behaviour with |zhu=
:
{{Cite Shiji
| 26 | trans-chapter= Treatise on horology
| zhu = 3
}}
→ Sima Qian; Sima Tan (1959) [90s BCE]. "Treatise on horology". In Pei Yin (裴駰); [in Chinese] Sima Zhen; Zhang Shoujie (張守節); Zhang Wenhu (張文虎) [in Chinese] (eds.). Shiji 史記三家注 [Records of the Grand Historian] (in Chinese) (annotated critical ed.). Beijing: Zhonghua Shuju.
Editorial attribution display can be suppressed as usual with |display-editors=0
.
All flags active:
{{Cite Shiji | 64
| trans-chapter= Biography of Sima Rangju
| zhu = true
| comma = yes
| sole = 1
| lp = 🆗
}}
→ Sima, Qian (1959) [90s BCE]. "Biography of Sima Rangju". In Pei, Yin (裴駰); [in Chinese] Sima, Zhen; Zhang, Shoujie (張守節); Zhang, Wenhu (張文虎) [in Chinese] (eds.). Shiji 史記三家注 [Records of the Grand Historian] (in Chinese) (annotated critical ed.). Beijing: Zhonghua Shuju.
