2015 White Sox–Orioles crowdless game
edit... that three years ago today the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 8–2 at Camden Yards in the first crowdless game in Major League Baseball history?Source: "One year ago today, the Orioles hosted the first Major League Baseball game played with no fans in attendance", The Baltimore Sun; April 29, 2016- ALT1:... that during the Baltimore Orioles–Chicago White Sox crowdless game three years ago today, announcer Gary Thorne called an Adam Jones at-bat in the hushed tone of golf announcers like Jim Nantz?Source: "With no natural crowd noise in the backdrop, the atmosphere at Camden Yards seemed as quiet as Sunday at Augusta National. In the seventh inning, with Adam Jones at the plate, Thorne summoned his inner-Jim Nantz for a splendid call" The Sporting News; April 29, 2015
- ALT2:
... that it has been estimated that the Baltimore Orioles lost over $1 million dollars on Major League Baseball's first crowdless game three years ago today?Source: "In Baltimore, Peter Schmuck notes based on the average ticket price at the ballpark and the average crowd for a midweek game this time of year, the Orioles yesterday 'probably forfeited' more than $1M (including concessions and parking)", Sports Business Daily; April 30, 2015 - ALT3:
... that during the first crowdless game in Major League Baseball history, three years ago today, Orioles' TV announcer Gary Thorne's calls could be heard in the background of those by his White Sox counterpart, Hawk Harrelson?Source: "This is incredible. You can hear Gary Thorne on the White Sox' broadcast" CBS Sports; April 29, 2015 - ALT4:
... that after the Baltimore Orioles–Chicago White Sox crowdless game three years ago today finished in just over two hours, several commentators suggested Major League Baseball should ban fans from all games if it really wanted to speed them up?Source:"The Orioles completed their 8-2 victory over the White Sox in 2 hours and 3 minutes. We learned that fans must be the problem with the pace of game." Mid-Atlantic Sports Network; April 29, 2015. "Just two hours and three minutes after the first pitch, the final out was recorded. So if MLB really wants to improve the pace of play, all they need to do is get rid of the fans." CBS Sports, see ALT3. "... at 2 hours, 3 minutes, baseball might have an extreme solution for its desires to speed up the game.", Associated Press in Delaware County Times, April 29, 2015; "Commissioner Rob Manfred's new direction is clear, then. Make the game more appealing to fans by not allowing fans to attend. It's just so crazy, it might work." SB Nation; April 29, 2015

- Comment: As should be clear I would like this to run on April 29, the third anniversary of the game. Yes, Sunday.

- New enough, long enough, neutrally written, well referenced, no close paraphrasing seen. All images in article freely licensed. QPQ done.
- I left a note on the article talk page about the choice of page name. I think it omits too much (the sport, the year), and also gives this topic significance that no other source gives it, capitalizing the name as if it were a proper name. Please see my comment there. A page move would not affect the target link, but the term "Crowdless Game" should be lowercase.
- Done As noted at the talk page, I have made this move. Daniel Case (talk) 01:16, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- The ALT0 hook is probably the best, but the two sources you give in the lead for "only crowdless game ever played by Major League Baseball teams" do not say that; footnote 2 only says it was the "first" in MLB history. So that needs to be changed in the article and hook. ALT1 is verified and cited inline; it's actually a pretty funny hook if you click through and listen to the call. I might add "in the low tone of voice of golf announcers..." or something that would indicate he was talking in an empty stadium. ALT2 is a nice hook, but it doesn't state this explicitly in the article. ALT3 is also good; verified and cited inline. I've struck ALT4 for being too wordy and off-topic. - @Yoninah: Done I have changed the hooks from "only" to "first", a choice I had originally made because the related Announcerless Game; when I wrote that one it was 35 years in the past and was at that point very definitely "only". However, I guess three years is not yet enough time for this one to be so definitely the "only".
I'm glad you like ALT1 so much; I would like it most of all on the Main Page too and as such I have incorporated your suggestion. Daniel Case (talk) 01:59, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, and here's one other hook I had meant to include:
- ALT5:
... that although no fans were allowed to watch the Orioles beat the White Sox 8–2 three years ago today, it was standing room only in the press box?Source"Ironically, on a day when no fans were allowed in the stands, it was standing room only on the press level", The Baltimore Sun, April 29, 2015.
