Christ Church, Russell
edit... that Charles Darwin helped build New Zealand's oldest church?- ALT0a:
... that Charles Darwin was inspired to contribute funds to the building of New Zealand's oldest church? - ALT0b: ... that Charles Darwin contributed funds to the building of New Zealand's oldest surviving church (pictured)? Source: Cumming, Geoff (2009-12-25). "Darwin in New Zealand". ISSN 1170-0777. Retrieved 2019-04-15. "One sight at Kororareka did impress Darwin and Fitzroy - the near-completed church. They thought it "a bold experiment" in such a place and, with the Beagle crew, contributed 15, a princely sum at the time. Their donation is recorded in the church subscription book held "

- Change "helped build" to "contributed to the cost of building". Yeah, I know it's longer, but it is accurate. He didn't pick up a saw or hammer. He, Fitzroy and the Beagle crew took the hat around and donated 15 pounds to the cost of building it. Moriori (talk) 03:20, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- You are right of course. But my wording was more fun. Let me know anything else, I am not good at writing these. (Dushan Jugum (talk) 03:35, 17 April 2019 (UTC)).
- "Was inspired"? How do you know? We know he "contributed to" but have no idea whether he was inspired, or if he was, by what/who. Moriori (talk) 03:40, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- They thought it "a bold experiment". Speaking of which feel free to be bold and change it to what you want, I have never seen one of your edits I disagree with. I want a little mystery for the hook, but it should also be accurate. (Dushan Jugum (talk) 03:52, 17 April 2019 (UTC)).
- Article looks good, long enough and nominated in time. Meets all policies. Hooks are sourced. I've made a slight tweak to 'oldest surviving church, to more closely follow the sources - which don't rule out earlier churches that have not survived, as unlikely as this may be. Even with the tweaking, I think the Darwin connection is particularly interesting. QPQ done, looks good to go. Spokoyni (talk) 21:05, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, I came by to promote this, and first restored the thread. In future, @Dushan Jugum: and @Moriori:, please make new alts instead of editing the old ones so the prep promoter can follow the discussion. I see the "oldest surviving church" fact in the lead without a source. Later in the text, it says "It has been speculated that the church is the oldest building in New Zealand that is still being used for its original intended purpose." This is not the same as the definitive statement of "oldest surviving church". If this is the only source you have, the lead and the hook should be changed. I also think you should be adding the freely-licensed image of the church to this nomination, so I did that. Yoninah (talk) 18:08, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry about that Yoninah. I am happy with "Christ Church is the oldest surviving church in New Zealand"[1]. This is from Heritage New Zealand, if there was an older one, they would know. My fault for not being explicated about each point in the hook. (Dushan Jugum (talk) 20:38, 30 April 2019 (UTC)).
- @Dushan Jugum: OK, I added the cite to the lead, which is the only place that mentions it. I also expanded the lead, as it was too short and vague on details. Does it look all right to you? Then I will approve this nomination. Yoninah (talk) 20:56, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Yoninah:, works for me, thanks. (Dushan Jugum (talk) 02:53, 1 May 2019 (UTC)).
