Edwin Maxwell (attorney general)
edit* ... that West Virginia lawyer Edwin Maxwell (pictured) was elected to the inaugural state senate, appointed attorney general, and elected an associate justice of the state supreme court?
ALT1: * ... that the proposed 1865 "Maxwell amendment" to the West Virginia Constitution, which removed the citizenship rights of former Confederates, was named for state senator Edwin Maxwell (pictured)?
- ALT2: * ... that state senator Edwin Maxwell (pictured) proposed the 1865 "Maxwell amendment" to the West Virginia Constitution, which would have removed the citizenship rights of former Confederates?

- New and long enough. Neutral and has inline citations. Didn't check for copyright violations. Hook is well formatted, accurate, sourced, and neutral, but boring. I think something on the Maxwell Amendment could be more interesting.RichardMathews (talk) 20:31, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
- It's a bit lengthy at 196 characters, but what do you think about ALT1, RichardMathews? -- West Virginian (talk) 23:31, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
- Getting better. Even though you start with "proposed," the "which removed" makes it sound too much like it actually happened. Adding "which would have removed" makes the hook too long. It might be more succinct and have more punch if you turn it around to have Maxwell as the subject, such as Maxwell tried to amend... or Maxwell proposed amending... - RichardMathews, is this more to your liking? -- West Virginian (talk) 22:52, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
- ALT2 is a winner, but I have WP:COPYVIO problems. There is significant copying from Atkinson & Gibbens 1890, p. 266; but copyright has expired. It still would be best to avoid copying. Copyright may not have expired for Callahan 1923, p. 7; so the copying there is a problem, though easily fixed. I can't check Lewis 1998, Morgan 1959, and Beckley Post-Herald 1958. At least Lewis is certainly under copyright. Given the other copying, I can't assume good faith. Please fix at least the Callahan copying and preferably the Atkinson copying, and tell me that there is no copying from the other three. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardMathews (talk • contribs) 07:13, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
- That may have come out more harsh than intended. I do assume you have good faith. I just can't use that assumption to convince myself there isn't other copying. But if you fix the other problems and tell me there is not a problem with the newer sources, I'll be satisfied based on good faith. RichardMathews (talk) 07:25, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
- RichardMathews, a lot of Maxwell's biographical information is going to seem as if it is paraphrased closely to the referenced sources, as there are only so many ways to say someone was elected to a position, or served as such and such between X and Y years. It would be helpful, rather than just accuse me of plagiarism, if you give me specific examples of where I have "copied." I have made some adjustments, and I hope that these edits alleviate your concerns of copying. -- West Virginian (talk) 14:07, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
- I also welcome and strongly encourage other comment from my fellow DYK colleagues. -- West Virginian (talk) 14:11, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
- RichardMathews, I copied the Callahan text into my sandbox and ran the Duplication Detector with the Edwin Maxwell article. As you can see in the results, the only similarities are terms like "was elected a member of the," "opportunities for," and "uncle lewis maxwell." Please let me know if you still have concerns. -- West Virginian (talk) 19:24, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
- RichardMathews, using the Duplication Detector, I ran another scan of the Edwin Maxwell article with the text of Atkinson and Gibbens copied into a second sandbox, and again the only similarities are terms and common phrases. -- West Virginian (talk) 19:38, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
- I'm satisfied with the changes. ALT2 is accepted.RichardMathews (talk) 02:44, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
