Eric Bullus
edit- ... that in 1952, British MP Eric Bullus proposed the reintroduction of flogging as a criminal punishment?
5x expanded by BethNaught (talk). Self nominated at 09:52, 16 July 2014 (UTC).
- Expanded 5x+ July 16, 2,857 characters, neutral, well sourced and cited, hook is short and interesting and cited in source 3, QPQ not done but apparently not required (is this your first DYK?) Some paraphrasing concerns, see here and here. Obviously, not everything needs to be changed ("Leeds Modern School and Leeds University" is fine) but some of it should be tweaked to be a little less verbatim ("later in 1930 he was elected to Leeds City Council"" could be changed). Don't worry too much about the shorter ones on those lists. BobAmnertiopsis∴ChatMe! 15:11, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for your helpful comments – this is indeed my first DYK nomination, so I'm trying to learn as I go along. I have edited the article in a few places to reduce close paraphrasing, and I believe the remaining matches on the duplication detector are now just names and standard phrases such as
dissolution honours list
. I'll work on it more if you think necessary. BethNaught (talk) 15:30, 16 July 2014 (UTC)- Looks good. Unrealted to the DYK but potentially helpful nonetheless, you might consider using the Cite news template instead of Cite web for your online news sources in future articles. Anyway, here's to many more DYKs in future! Keep up the good work! BobAmnertiopsis∴ChatMe! 15:36, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
- Cheers, I hope to be back soon. BethNaught (talk) 15:46, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, can you possibly clarify something? The cited article says "Up to 1948 robbery with violence and armed robbery were the only important offences for which flogging and birching could be imposed. Wing Commander Eric Bullus (Con. Wembley North) decided yesterday to widen his Private Member's Bill to cover, besides these offences, felonious wounding, malicious wounding, rape and indecent assault on females." The Wiki article, meanwhile, claims "He introduced the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill, which aimed to reinstate flogging as a punishment for violent and armed robbery (a punishment that had been abolished in 1948), as well as for wounding and rape, in 1952, and it was debated in early 1953." From the cited article, I don't get the sense that flogging was ever banned as a punishment, just that Bullus hoped to expand its use. BobAmnertiopsis∴ChatMe! 16:11, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
- Whipping as a criminal sentence was abolished by the Criminal Justice Act 1948. I have clarified this in the article, though the sentence is now somewhat unwieldy. BethNaught (talk) 16:24, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
- Works for me! Thanks! BobAmnertiopsis∴ChatMe! 16:30, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
