that in 996, the large fleet being prepared by the Fatimid caliph al-Aziz went up in flames just as it was about to set sail, resulting in anti-Christian pogroms in Cairo? Source: Lev 1984, p. 242 "al-Aziz made extensive naval preparations [...] However, fire broke out in the arsenal consuming the ships [...] The suspicion of Cairo's mob fell on Merchants from Amalfi [...] Local Christian communities and their churches were also attacked.."ALT1:... that in the 12th century, the Fatimid Caliphate was only one of three states in the Mediterranean to maintain a standing fleet? Source: Pryor 1988, p. 124 "In fact the only powers which did maintain anything like a professional, permanent war fleet in the twelfth century were Fatimid Egypt, the Byzantine empire, and the Kingdom of Sicily. Even Venice, Genoa, and Pisa at this time still assembled war fleets from their commercial shipping when need arose."ALT2:... that the Fatimid navy played a central role in the Fatimid–Byzantine conflicts over Sicily and southern Italy in the early 10th century? Source: A summary of the "Ifriqiyan period of the Fatimid navy" section.ALT3:... that during the final stage of the Siege of Tripoli by the Crusaders, the Fatimid navy was delayed by contrary winds and the fear of a Genoese fleet, and arrived at the city only eight days after its fall? Source: Hamblin 1986, p. 82 "The Fatimid relief fleet is delayed by indecision and contrary winds, arriving after Tripoli falls". & Lev 1991, p. 109 "Fatimid navy failed to reach the besieged town on time, although the Crusaders had established their camp in front of the town as early as Sha'bān 502/March-April 1109. It seems that the presence of a Genoese fleet of 60 ships deterred the Fatimids from approaching the town. Fatimid fleet arrived in Tripoli eight days after the capitulation of the town"

- A very substantial article on a big topic, well researched and sourced, and extremely interesting. Article long enough, time since promoted to GA fine, no copyvio or plagiarism issues identified, reliable sources used. Can’t access one of the inline citations backing up hook (117), and the other is in German (118), but happy to AGF. Apart from QPQ, the only issue is the hook. ALT0 is potentially the hookiest but it’s a little too long at the moment. Suggest:
