Fay E. Davis

edit
  • ... that 50 years after a mural by Fay E. Davis depicting 14 Native Americans in battle was installed in the Oglesby, Illinois post office, a janitor claimed it was pornographic? Source: "The controversial painting was covered with blinds in mid-June when post office janitor John Swarz filed a union grievance calling the scene pornographic." (Alton Telegraph)

  • Review New enough, long enough, free of copyright violations or close paraphrasing. Earwig is clear. QPQ confirmed. I would like to include the picture if we could. However, I did not check the picture in Commons out, as it is not included in the present hook. Hook is neutral and interesting; supported by two on line newspaper sources. One of the newspaper articles was amusing – reasoning that it couldn't have included nudes as every schoolboy in the town would be there, looking at it the way they do with the National Geographic at the library. This was the subject of a grievance filed by the janitor through his union. Presumably, Grievance DENIED as it went back on display. Charming article. Well done! 7&6=thirteen () 21:56, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the quick review! I considered including the image, which is freely licensed, but thought the hook would be more hooky without it (makes people want to click on the article). If you feel strongly about it, though, I could nominate the image. Yoninah (talk) 22:06, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

I don't feel strongly. I thought it was a good image and it is used in the article. It is a WPA mural so it is freely licensed. I gave it a Thumbs up icon whatever you decide. 7&6=thirteen () 22:29, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Thanks to you both. I got a huge kick out of the controversy. The nudity is so slight that one postal employee said, if there were real nudity, people would have been clamoring to see the painting, which they weren't before the guy complained ;D Like Yoninah, I think maybe without the image people will go to see it.
