Perhaps even more interesting: ALT3: ... that Herbert Garland defended the town of Yanbu from Ottoman attack in 1916 with 300-year-old coral walls, searchlights and an old cannon that was "apt to fire astern instead of forward"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dumelow (talkcontribs) 21:40, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Impressive, detailed article on good sources. Many interesting sourced hooks! I think the first is too simple for such a colourful personality. ALT1: I don't like "might have". Playing with / shortening the two others:
ALT4: ... that Herbert Garland (pictured) taught Lawrence of Arabia how to use explosives?
ALT5: ... that Herbert Garland (pictured) defended the town of Yanbu from Ottoman attack with 300-year-old coral walls, searchlights and an old Turkish cannon? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:28, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

- lots of alts - I particularly like Alt4 which is the only one I have checked to its source. Solid article with lots of reliable sources. Length and age are fine. Very interesting guy. Can we add the picture to the hooks? Happy to go with with alt4 - although other hooks may be good too. I thought "Garland of Arabia" was very catchy particular given Lawrence's description of his skills.
