Lucy Madox Brown

edit

Portrait of Lucy Madox Brown, painted by her father, Ford Madox Brown

  • ... that a painting by Lucy Madox Brown (pictured as a child) was described by Dante Gabriel Rossetti as a "perfect picture"?
  • Comment: This is a little late because I only just discovered the article. I was hoping for some leniency, especially since the author has fewer than 50 contributions.

  • Article and hook OK (giving leniency on the timing to recognise work of a good, new contributor). @Mandarax: Sole outstanding question around whether you want to update the hook and image as a copy of Duet is available on commons. If you prefer to stick with the hook and image as is that's amenable too. SFB 14:42, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

The Duet, by Lucy Madox Brown

Here's the hook, with Sillyfolkboy's suggestion for an alternative picture:
IMO, the image of the little girl is more interesting at this size, but YMMV. The hook itself is fully approved. Both images are free, but there are still some documentation issues to be resolved for the license on the image that Sillyfolkboy uploaded at Commons (although the image is assuredly PD). --Orlady (talk) 21:21, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
I didn't actually intend for the painting of her as a girl to be used. I had found two images which I intended to upload to Commons, and wanted to see which would work better at DYK thumbnail size. I was too tired to upload, but I wanted get the nomination saved before it got any tardier, so I used the girl as filler. Thank you very much Sillyfolkboy for uploading one of the images which I was going to upload and Orlady for adding it here. I've now uploaded the other image, to be used as:

Portrait of Lucy Madox Brown, drawn by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

  • ALT2: ... that Lucy Madox Brown's (pictured) painting The Duet was described by Dante Gabriel Rossetti as a "perfect picture"?
I also tweaked ALT1 to add the name of the painting, and edited the Commons information on ALT1's image, so that issue's resolved. While I generally prefer to use an artist's own work to illustrate their hooks, in this case, I think her portrait is so striking that I prefer ALT2. I'd like this to be considered for International Women's Day (March 8). MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 00:01, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
  • All ok for all 3 hooks - subscription only source. If ALT2 is used I think it should say (pictured as a child) and link DGR (original hook also). Could go International Women's Day (March 8), but best with one of the pictures. Johnbod (talk) 12:47, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
  • The work pictured in ALT2 was created in 1874, when the subject was about 31 years old, so she was not a child. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 23:00, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Ah, right. But the child image is the stronger of the two portraits, but whatever. Johnbod (talk) 00:46, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
