... that the NYU Violets men's basketball program was disbanded in 1971 after appearing in two NCAA Division I Final Fours, and claiming two national championships before the creation of the NCAA tournament (1920 and 1935)?

I think the fact is quite interesting, but maybe the wording makes it a bit bland. How about this:

ALT1: ... that the NYU Violets men's basketball team, twice national champions before the creation of the NCAA tournament, had to be disbanded in 1971 due to a budget crisis?
