Nils Elias Anckers
... that Swedish officer Nils Elias Anckers (pictured), who entered the service of the Congo Free State and was later awarded its Service Star, was also an artist? Source: Mainly here.- Reviewed: Template:Did you know nominations/Don Tait
- Comment: Open to other hook suggestions, I think one could make more/others out of his biography.
Created by Yakikaki (talk). Self-nominated at 21:11, 27 February 2024 (UTC). Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Nils Elias Anckers; consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.
- I'll take this review. Dwkaminski (talk) 20:22, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

- Interesting: - I believe this could be improved. I don't see what is interesting about his service in the Congo or winning the Silver Star. See bulleted comments below. I would highlight he is a Swedish Navy officer - not just a Swedish officer.

QPQ: Done. |
Overall: Dwkaminski (talk) 20:27, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
- Long enough - Javascript Kit character count (without references/sources) shows 3,551
- Earwig copvio detector shows 2% - violation unlikely
- Hook is cited to a reference in Swedish (which I don't read) - but AGF
- I like the picture, but have to agree with @1ctinus: - it's too blurry for usage on the homepage DYK. Recommend to remove if you can't find a clearer image.
- The hooks should come from the submitter - but... I like the juxtaposition of military officer and artist - could you submit one that highlights his role as a kommendor in the Swedish Navy with winning the silver medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition for his art?
- One QPQ has been completed - however new guidance states that editors with greater than 20 DYK should do two QPQs to reduce the backlog
- @Yakikaki: I've completed my review and rated it as maybe. I think these issues I've highlighted can be addressed and we can get this approved. Please let me know if you have any questions. Dwkaminski (talk) 13:14, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Dwkaminski for your both kind and constructive review! I think I have solved the issues with the references, replacing one with a link to a pdf and replacing the bad link in the other with one that hopefully works. For the foreseeable future I would struggle with identifying more (probably off-line) sources to add, because I'm not living in Sweden right now. I hope it can still be deemed sufficient? I know some of the sources are a little old, but to me they seem reliable and serious. As for the picture, I agree with you actually, looking at it properly it is very grainy and unsuitable, so I think we can disregard it. And then for ALT hooks, perhaps either of these could work?
ALT1: ...that Nils Elias Anckers was a kommendör in the Swedish Navy who as an artist won a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition?ALT1: ...that Nils Elias Anckers was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences, but also won a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition for his artworks?- Let me know what you think. Perhaps they can be tweaked further. All the best, Yakikaki (talk) 19:28, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- How about ALT1a: ...that Nils Elias Anckers was a kommendör in the Swedish Navy who won a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition for his artwork? Dwkaminski (talk) 19:37, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- Looks excellent to me. Yakikaki (talk) 19:39, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Dwkaminski: By the way, I found a slightly better picture of Anckers, and updated the article with it. It is still probably not good enough for the main page though. Best, Yakikaki (talk) 20:33, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- It's a little grainy but I'll approve. Please include it and let me know when you have completed your changes and second QPQ. Dwkaminski (talk) 13:02, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks again! Actually, I would prefer to run this DYK without a picture. The present one is really just a portrait, not very exciting as a picture in its own right. So if it is OK for you I would be in favour of skipping it altogether in the DYK? As for the extra QPQ, I was informed this is only applicable for nominations done after the backlog mode went active, which was early March sometime. Best, Yakikaki (talk) 19:40, 22 March 2024 (UTC)

- Changed rating to approved for ALT1a: ...that Nils Elias Anckers was a kommendör in the Swedish Navy who won a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition for his artwork? No picture to be included. I updated the Dahl reference in sources and added a link to page 84. I slightly re-worded ALT1a for readability. Thanks! Dwkaminski (talk) 14:49, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
