South Lake Union Streetcar

edit

Improved to Good Article status by SounderBruce (talk). Self-nominated at 18:45, 11 March 2019 (UTC).

  • Perfect material for April Fools! Date of GA status and length fine. All hooks are brilliant and I would approve them all, I'll let the promoter choose which one though alt1 is probably my least favourite. QPQ done, no close paraphrasing. Good to go for AFD. Well done! The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 12:41, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
Discussion that got out of hand

Dare I suggest --

ALT4 ... that sluts in Seattle can come every ten minutes?

-- though I can't see which of the article's sources gives this explicitly. EEng 16:28, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

@EEng: Seattle Streetcar, "7 a.m. – 7 p.m. 10 minutes".  Nova Crystallis (Talk) 19:34, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I certainly hope SounderBruce will throw his weight behind this hook, because this year's AFD is way, way below quota for crude humor. EEng 19:52, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
I like the sound of it, but I'd rather have the hook be longer. Perhaps this
ALT4a: ... that the Seattle slut can come every ten minutes and serves 1,900 people per day?
SounderBruce 04:13, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
In that case
ALT4b: ... that sluts in Seattle service up to 1,900 customers per day and can come every ten minutes?
EEng 04:24, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
How about this:
ALT4c: ... that the Seattle sluts can come every ten minutes, and 1,900 ride them every day?
Nova Crystallis (Talk) 04:31, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

If you feel strongly I'll leave the choice to you, but as one of DYK's best-known hookers I recommend A4b. It's hard to explain but I think it reads more smoothly. (In case you're unfamiliar with my work, let me modestly direct you to such tasteless smash hits as The Vicar of Brighton shot in the twitten, The erection engineer elected to the screw committee, The corporate CEO grilled on the witness stand, the missionary for whom erections indicated apprehension and, of course, Dr. Young's Ideal Rectal Dilators being forcibly withdrawn after officials clamped down on them.) EEng 05:53, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

I'd rather have the frequency before the daily ridership, for the extra punch. While I appreciate your input for a raunchy hook, I'd like to keep it concise and non-pluralized. SounderBruce 05:45, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
Then strike all but the hook you want and ping the reviewer back. EEng 06:03, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
I also prefer mentioning the daily ridership over the frequency. Agreed that it reads more smoothly, and 1,900 is a much larger number than ten. And I do prefer "SLUTs in Seattle" over "Seattle SLUTs", as the latter suggests a finite, identifiable group of people – which is not the message we want to send across. feminist (talk) 14:59, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

I realize now that, given it's April Fools, we're allowed to take some liberties with the hook by changing SLUT --> slut. I've done that above. I've also adjusted the boundaries of what's in bold. Hope that's OK. EEng 12:17, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

  • We need to be careful here as some of the above hooks are likely to be considered misogynist. You might get away with something simple like "that sluts in Seattle come every few minutes?" - but even that much would be on the borderline IMO. Gatoclass (talk) 06:06, 20 March 2019 (UTC).
Oh for fuck's sake (note the choice of words), if it was the Seattle Area Transit Yellow Railroad, or the Portland InterModal Parkway, we'd be talking about SATYRs and PIMPs. It's April Fools, for heaven's sake. Why, even our resident Feminist seems OK with it. EEng 12:17, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
EEng, I didn't say that I personally am opposed to any of the above hooks, I'm just predicting that if you lay it on with a trowel, you are going to get complaints and a possible hook pull. As it happens though, I do think that people are likely to guess the nature of the joke if you mention the number of clients. Also, as I mentioned above "sluts" should be decapitalized as that also gives the joke away. Gatoclass (talk) 14:33, 20 March 2019 (UTC).
Sorry, I didn't mean to unload on you speocifically. I guess I'm a bit touchy. I've had it up here <makes chopping motion at neck> with the language and victimization police around here lately. EEng 22:38, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
I just want to say that this is LOL awesome, and makes my Young People Fucking nom look tame by comparison. Well done. – Reidgreg (talk) 23:12, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
<hooker bows, acknowledges applause> EEng 00:01, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

EEng, after belatedly stumbling across the donaldtrumpii nom, I can understand your frustration!

With regard to this nom however, I'm still concerned, because even the word "slut" used as a double entrendre is likely to get some folks bent out of shape, and use of the plural, "sluts", may be used to pull the hook on the basis of inaccuracy (since there's actually only one "slut" in the article).

As it happens though, I think I've come up with a better hook than the one I proposed above, which has the added advantage of also being less in-your-face, as follows:

ALT5: that thousands of locals have taken advantage of Seattle's biggest slut? Gatoclass (talk) 06:23, 25 March 2019 (UTC).

Well, I don't see how those inclined to tsk-tsk are going to do any less tsk-tsking for ALT5 than they would for any of the others. I don't think the plural is a problem, especially for AfD. Personally I prefer any of ALTs 4,4a,4b,4c but let's leave it to the nominator. EEng 13:59, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Arbitrary break
  • Can we get back on topic? I really don't like having a DYK nomination hijacked like this, especially when there's only a week left to get this ready for the Main Page. As it stands, I only have a few hooks from above that I actually like, in descending order:
  • The rest can be tossed out. SounderBruce 01:42, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
SounderBruce, hooks are determined by consensus, not by nominators fiat, so you can't simply rule out other's hooks, though you are of course entitled to express a preference. The reason I don't care for your option 1 is that to my mind it's too obvious that the "slut" is a transport system, and I share the objection to option 2 with Nova. So I'm standing by my ALT5, but am content to leave the final choice of hook in this instance to the set promoter. Regards, Gatoclass (talk) 08:53, 26 March 2019 (UTC).
  • Due apologies: I know this is for AFD and I know NOTCENSORED, but I'm uncomfortable with any option that doesn't imply that the subject is a streetcar. I am open to the word "slut" being used in a hook as long as it can't be misinterpreted, since not all readers would bother actually opening links. Thus I oppose the use of ALT0 (and variants) as well as ALT5. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 19:03, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
Here we go again. It's April Fools Day. The hook is supposed to be misinterpreted, and the reader is supposed to have to open the link to be disabused. What, to you, is the point of AFD otherwise? EEng 19:48, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
AFD hooks can be misleading but at the same time not tacky. And remember, I never actually said we should reject the "slut" hooks, only make sure that they can't be too ambiguous. Unlike what was mentioned above, I actually find ALT1 rather funny, but it seems the nominator is against it. Another possible option is ALT2 which is actually kind of funny. I'm more neutral on ALT4b and ALT4c since IMO they can be a bit borderline, but it would be more likely that it could be found out that they refer to transportation so I don't oppose them. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:02, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
What EEng said. Gatoclass (talk) 02:09, 27 March 2019 (UTC).
Of course AFD hooks can be misleading but at the same time not tacky, but tacky is more fun. EEng 04:34, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
  • How about a slight tweak to ALT2:
ALT6: that 1,900 people in Seattle rode the city's slut on a daily basis?
Readers will likely guess what the "slut" is, but the double entendre can still be appreciated. Gatoclass (talk) 10:28, 27 March 2019 (UTC).
Traitor. EEng 13:21, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
I'm taking that as an expression of acquiescence (albeit probably derived through exhaustion). On the plus side, I think it's actually a pretty good hook that strikes a nice compromise between the various positions expressed above. Cheers, Gatoclass (talk) 03:21, 28 March 2019 (UTC).

Everyone, we have two days left to settle on one of the hooks. Nova Crystallis (Talk) 03:49, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

ALT6 is the only hook about which there has been no disagreement so that is the one that should be promoted. The others have all had objections of one type or another raised. Gatoclass (talk) 10:20, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
