5x expansion from 1075 to 5552 bytes verified. Prose good although I would prefer for "maths" to be spelled out and "an emeritus" should probably be "as emeritus". Earwig found a 33% similarity with the Telegraph obit, seemingly a high rate, but checking found these all to be proper nouns and set phrases; I don't think the level of copying is problematic. The expanded version meets DYK standards of sourcing. The hook is properly attention-catching and sourced. But per DYK's somewhat-pedantic rules the actual sentence "he was taken prisoner by the Italians" needs a copy of the same footnote; someone (Hawkeye7?) please add this before it is promoted. Additionally it would help if the sentence about his Olympic participation mentioned that it was in Italy. Beyond these small points, good to go. I'm using the AGF tickmark instead of the green one because I have good faith that the small cleanups will be done, but they are so minor that I don't think it should hold up my approval and don't want to be bothered re-reviewing to approve them. —David Eppstein (talk) 07:41, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
