This is a documentation subpage for Template:LSJ. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
Generates a link to the online Ancient Greek entry of a word in A Greek–English Lexicon by Liddell/Scott/Jones (LSJ) or in An Intermediate Greek–English Lexicon (Middle Liddell Scott), a condensed edition of the former, both hosted on the Perseus Project. The two editions generally overlap, as far as entries are concerned, but not fully. For instance, ἀΐσσω occurs in Middle Liddell, but not in the regular edition due to an error in the Perseus edition.
Usage
edit- Syntax
{{LSJ|beta_code|greek_text|ref_type|use_intermediate}}
where:
- beta_code (required) is the Beta Code transliteration for the entry name.
- greek_text (optional; preferable for reference readability) is the text to display in the link, typically written using a polytonic Greek character set with full Ancient Greek diacritics.
- ref_type (optional) is the desired format of the reference text to be created, if any. Valid values are: ref (or cite), shortref, longref.
- use_intermediate (optional) is the option to select the intermediate edition. The regular edition is used by default; the only valid value is mLSJ which is the necessary option in order to use the intermediate edition.
All parameters are order of input specific. All optional parameters are case sensitive.

---|---|---|
{{LSJ|h(/lios|ἥλιος}} |
ἥλιος | Most commonly, both the beta code and Ancient Greek text are provided, like this entry for helios. |
{{LSJ|h(/lios|ἥλιος|mLSJ}} |
ἥλιος | Same as the above but linking to the word entry of the Intermediate edition of the dictionary, instead of the regular one. |
{{LSJ|h(/lios}} |
h(/lios | The link looks a bit odd with just beta code, but it does function. |
{{LSJ|ἥλιος}} |
ἥλιος | "No document found". Beta code is mandatory. |
{{LSJ|ἥλιος|h(/lios}} |
h(/lios | "No document found". Beta code must be first. |
{{LSJ|h(/lios|mLSJ|ἥλιος}} |
mLSJ | Wrong entry (not of intermediate edition), wrong text. Greek text must precede mLSJ. |
For an equals sign (=), the Beta Code symbol for circumflex, use the template {{=}} instead of the equals sign itself. The template will place the equals sign into the link. (A parameter with a bare "=" is invalid, since that symbol has meaning in template code: |parameter=value
.)
Similarly for a vertical bar (|), the Beta Code for iota subscript, use the template {{!}} instead of the vertical bar itself.
Citing as a reference
editFor a citation, place ref (or its equivalent cite) as the second or third parameter. For a long citation, use longref, and for a very short citation (suitable for subsequent references), use shortref. Multiple entries might be cited by leaving the parameters of all, except of the last one, empty.
Note: If a footnote at the bottom of the page is desired, you must manually place <ref>...</ref>
tags around this template.

{{LSJ|h(/lios|ref|ἥλιος}}
|
h(/lios | Proper entry, wrong text, no reference. Greek text must precede ref. |
{{LSJ|h(/lios|ἥλιος|mLSJ|longref}}
|
ἥλιος | Wrong entry (not of intermediate edition), correct text, no reference. longref must precede mLSJ. |
A full example where multiple references might be generated might be coded thus:
The genus name ''[[Nycticebus]]'' derives from the
{{langx|grc|νύξ|nyx|night}}
+
{{lang|grc|κῆβος}}
{{transl|grc|kêbos}}
"monkey".
<ref>
{{LSJ|nu/c|νύξ|ref}}
.</ref>
<ref>
{{LSJ|kh{{=}}bos|κῆβος|shortref}}
.</ref>
← Note the "{{=}}"!
Which displays as the following text (including references):
- The genus name Nycticebus derives from the Ancient Greek: νύξ, romanized: nyx, lit. 'night' + κῆβος kêbos "monkey".[1][2]
- References
- ^ νύξ. Liddell, Henry George; Scott, Robert; A Greek–English Lexicon at the Perseus Project.
- ^ κῆβος in Liddell and Scott.
Complex example
editFor some words, finding a Perseus entry can be difficult, because of dialectal variants, non-conventional Beta Code, letter case and numbers marking homographs. Perseus can be unforgiving in this regard. If you have difficulty, try searching with Beta Code (with or without accents) using the Dictionary Entry Lookup on the Perseus Search Tools page (be sure to select "Greek" in the drop-down list).

{{LSJ|lao/s1|λαός}} |
λαός | Proper and working entry |
{{LSJ|la{{=}}os2|λᾶος}} |
λᾶος | Entry of the aforementioned homograph of the above, note the {{=}} template |
{{LSJ|e)/rebos|ἔρεβος}} |
ἔρεβος | Needs asterisk, denoting initial capital letter, and different ordering of symbols |
{{LSJ|*)/erebos|Ἔρεβος}} |
Ἔρεβος | Proper and working entry |
Non-traditional Beta Code sometimes used in Perseus entry names includes using an underscore _ for a macron and a Latin circumflex ^ for a brachy or a breve. A macron or a brachy that appears on its own is sometimes marked in the entry form. A macron or a brachy that appears on the same vowel as an acute or breathing is noted in brackets after the entry, and doesn't have to be bothered with: a)rgu/rion [u^].
