Usage
editThis:

gives this:
A hadith attributed to Ibn Abbas reports:[1]
Sunnis tend to view this as Sahih and have included it in Sahih Muslim.
Shi'as tend to view this as da'if.
All parameters are technically optional, except for the |text=
parameter (which can also be given as |quote=
, |content=
, or |matn=
).
The |ref=
parameter is for the source of the hadith text (for additional sourcing, see below). Use
Another example:

gives this:
To provide citations specifically for the claims about Shia or Sunni treatment, use |ShiaRef=
and |SunniRef=
, respectively. They take the same format as |ref=
, e.g.: |ShiaRef=

gives this:
A hadith attributed to Someone reports:[6]
Arabic: أحاديث ضعيفة وموضوعة - إسلام ويب - مركز الفتوى
Combined example:

gives this:
A hadith attributed to Someone reports:[7]
Arabic: أحاديث ضعيفة وموضوعة - إسلام ويب - مركز الفتوى
Sunnis tend to view this as Sahih and have included it in Sahih Muslim.[8]
Shi'as tend to view this as da'if.[9]
Citations emitted by the above examples:
Citing sources
editIf you use the |ref=
parameter, the <ref>
markup is not optional.
If you do not use it, then a Citation needed
tag will be emitted instead. If you've already provided a citation, e.g. because you're quoting several hadiths back-to-back, you can suppress that with |cn=no
.
The side template Hadith USC
can be used to supply online-accessible citations for some hadiths. As of 2019, the original site hosting them is defunct, so only those recoverable with Web.Archive.org are usable.
It is also best to provide citations for any claims made about the acceptance of this hadith by Sunni and Shia muslims, with the parameters for this (|SunniRef=
, |ShiaRef=
). Not doing so won't emit citation-needed tags, since the first source cited (in |ref=
, for the hadith text itself) may also be a source for these claims.
