Usage

edit

This template may be put at the top of a biographical article to explain to readers unfamiliar with traditional Welsh names what ap, ab, &c. mean and how they function. For names requiring a longer chain for disambiguation such as Gruffydd ap Rhys ap Thomas, up to two additional links can be added.

Syntax

edit
{{Welsh name|[personal name]|[father]|[grandfather] (optional)|[great-grandfather] (optional)}}

The template requires at least two fields: the personal name and the father's name.

Female names

edit

To use this template for female names such as Elen ferch Llywelyn, use the field f= for the daughter's name:

{{Welsh name|f=[personal name]|[father]}}

The template does not automatically generate links, but links may be inserted or piped into the template.

Examples

edit
Wikitext Result
{{Welsh name|Gruffudd|Cynan}}
{{Welsh name|f=Elen|Llywelyn}}
{{Welsh name|Gruffudd|[[Cynan ab Iago|Cynan]]}}
{{Welsh name|Gruffudd|Cynan|Iago}}
{{Welsh name|Gruffudd|Cynan|Iago|Idwal}}
{{Welsh name|Gruffudd|Cynan|Iago|[[Idwal Foel|Idwal]]}}

Errors

edit

Failing to include a personal and paternal name or including too many links will generate error messages:

Wikitext Result
{{Welsh name}}
{{Welsh name|Gruffudd}}
{{Welsh name|f=Elen}}
{{Welsh name|Gruffudd|Cynan|Iago|Idwal|Meurig}}

This template is intended for use with the English common names of historical Welsh figures.

As such, it should not be used for and does not support lists of matrilineal descent which were never the primary means of describing historical figures.

Using it to trace matrilineal descent will produce error messages or erroneous outputs:

Wikitext Result
{{Welsh name|Rhodri|f=Nest|Cadell}}
{{Welsh name|f=Hawise|f=Elen|f=Joan}}
{{Welsh name|f=Hawise|f1=Elen|f2=Joan}}
