Borders missing in latest update

edit

@Qwerty284651: If the changes I made broke the {{5-set tennis}}, how else do I add "scope" and re-stylize headers into captions, especially per MOS:ACCESS and MOS:TABLE? Also, what about "plainrowheaders"? George Ho (talk) 23:38, 4 September 2024 (UTC) (Cut (but then reverted)-and-pasted from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tennis. --George Ho (talk) 23:49, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@George Ho:, your latest good faith update to the template removed the borders and added caption. I am grateful for moving the example to a newly created doc page for the template. But the new look is weird and I would kindly ask for the border and caption edits be undone, please. Qwerty284651 (talk) 23:55, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay, so. First thing's first. The template's using conditional functions, #switch and #if, so you need to convert any pipelines | inside the conditional functions into {{!}}. See m:Help:Magic_words#Other and Help:Conditional expressions as well as a {{Escape template list}}. Qwerty284651 (talk) 00:04, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I propose using the Template:5-set tennis/sandbox and Template:5-set tennis/testcases to test out the new look before making it live on the main template. Qwerty284651 (talk) 23:57, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Were you trying to add 2 captions to the template with this edit? Qwerty284651 (talk) 00:11, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just wanna appease screen readers and abide to MOS:ACCESS. Also, I sometimes find colspan just cumbersome unless it's needed to spread cells for two columns or more. But for headers... I just like re-stylizing the headers (of matches) and subtitles (of descriptions). George Ho (talk) 00:45, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Here's an example of how to use testcases: Template:Performance_key/testcases. Any changes made in the /sandbox are reflected on the /testcase. Or this example: Template:Sticky table start/testcases. Qwerty284651 (talk) 00:33, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Qwerty284651: I'm not very fond of (code-inserting) borders and background colors in captions, honestly. Nonetheless, I hope the recent changes to the sandbox version pleases you more. Any more suggestions? George Ho (talk) 19:56, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Have you tried using {{Screen reader-only}} for the caption? Qwerty284651 (talk) 20:55, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Unfamiliar with that template, honestly. Nonetheless, I like more visibility; the template hides content just for screen readers to voice hidden content. MOS:HIDDEN should apply, actually. Speaking of which, I just now raised this at Template talk:Screen reader-only. Back to your suggestion, what content do you propose for only screen readers? George Ho (talk) 22:36, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I did some changes myself, restored both header text and match description and the scope for both. A table should only have 1 caption not 3, so I removed the other 2. Tested {{sro}} and the note param. Are you happy with the current design? Qwerty284651 (talk) 15:41, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well... I left out only your changes to the title, header text, and match descr parameters. I like normal automation of what "! does. Rather I copied just the "scope", recommeded by MOS:ACCESS, to column and row headers. Well, what now? You and I are likely unable to compromise about the header text and match descr, and I guess I'm unlikely to convince you about MOS:COLHEAD, so we're at an impasse then? I'm close to requesting at WP:3O, honestly. George Ho (talk) 21:51, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
You don't have to ping me each time in the edit summary. Pinging me here with {{ping}} works fine.
I see you implemented some of the changes. I added plainrowheaders to fix the center alignment caused by scope and added Note to the note to indicate that it is, in fact, a note
As for the MOS:COLHEAD I would love to solve the issue. Before starting WP:30, let me try one more thing. Qwerty284651 (talk) 23:46, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
"Header text" does not violate MOS:COLHEAD, because it is a column header at the top of a table (section reads "Avoiding column headers in the middle of the table") only "match description" does. Qwerty284651 (talk) 00:35, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I used a workaround for "match description". It should suffice. Qwerty284651 (talk) 00:47, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@George Ho, the tables are all skewed in Special:Permalink/1244422503. I reverted the latest update. I have exhausted all my ideas. If you don't have any other, then take it to WP:30. Qwerty284651 (talk) 01:04, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
