Template:Age

Ever wonder how old your favorite child actor is? This template will help you satisfy your curiosity.

You can't just subtract the kid's birth year from the current year...

  • 23 July 1989 - 35 (boy)
  • 23 February 1994 - 30 (girl)

Be the first to identify the well-known actor whose birthdate and age are shown above! --Uncle Ed 20:14, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Instead of checking the current age, you can also specify the date on which the age is measured, by passing 3 additional parameters. --Misza13 T C 12:17, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Call it {{years between}}? --Uncle Ed 15:55, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
And make it a redirect to {{age}}? :) --Misza13 T C 17:20, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
No, I forgot that we can employ optional parameters. Your version is just fine. Let's just wait for the deletion votes to be tabulated, and then we can really start using the template. I have a whole bunch of ideas. --Uncle Ed 18:57, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Deletion controversy

See templates for deletion. Wikipedia:Templates for deletion#Template:Age —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ed Poor (talkcontribs) 02:56, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Date format

While this is a great template, I must say that I don't like that the (american?) MM/DD/YYYY format was chosen. I propose that we quickly switch to ISO 8601 YYYY/MM/DD and fix all current uses before it gets massively widespread. Misza13 T C 12:21, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

The usage is already using the ISO format... Documentation was added, template was correctly categorized, and more tests were added. verdy_p 15:46, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
it makes the adjustment automatically , where if you set (My preferences/Date and Time) to show MM/DD/YYYY the article will show as an example May 13, 2009 where if the user has thier preferences set to DD/MM/YYYY they would see 13 May. 2009 on the same page.Make sure you delete Temporary Internet files after the change to preferences or you'll may see no change. Would be nice to have a bot replace all dates (such as dob's) in all articles with the date template --Sirex98 18:52, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

TfD nomination of Template:Age

Template:Age has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you. FuriousFreddy 07:06, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Please add current date to the display

For this template to be of real use, it needs to display the date when the age was calculated. This helps to time-proof such time-sensitive information. The date calculated would be shown for permanent media like a print or CD version, while the date calculated could be hidden for dynamic, current versions online. See User_talk:Cyde#Ages_and_updating_articles. Carcharoth 02:41, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

PS. This only applies to living people of course. Once someone is dead, the ages can be calculated and permanently edited in to the article. As indeed should ages for living people for what they did in the past. It is only the current age of living people that this applies to. Carcharoth 02:44, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

{{#expr:{{#time:Y|1970-01-01 00:00:00 +{{#expr:{{#time:U|{{{1|today}}}}}-{{#time:U|{{{1|2000-12-12}}}}}}} seconds}}-1970}}

AzaToth 18:05, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Not sure what that's supposed to do. My calculation of age is meant to become one higher on the person's birthday. If you're born on Dec. 25th, 1990, then you are 15 years old until 12/24/2006. On 12/25/2006 you 'gain' an entire year overnight.
If we need a template to give fractional years, that's fine. Call it {{fractional age}} or {{decimal age}} or something. --Uncle Ed 20:03, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Documentation

Is this #expr technique documented somewhere? Seems quite interesting for other purposes as well. --Abdull 14:01, 10 December 2006 (UTC).

Separate description

Please separate the description and other non-code content from the protected code, similar to what has been done with other templates. --PhantomS 09:46, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Can you clarify what you mean, or give an example? Chick Bowen 19:04, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
I was thinking of something similar to what was done for {{Infobox actor}}, where the documentation is transcluded. In addition, please add a {{protected template}}. --PhantomS 19:11, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Done. Please note that the documentation could use some expansion. Chick Bowen 19:19, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Never mind--there's something weird going on--can you check my edit (since reverted)? Chick Bowen 19:27, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
It seems you've accidentally inserted an image tag into the code part. --PhantomS 19:30, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, figured that out--now it's done. Chick Bowen 19:31, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Thank you. --PhantomS 19:33, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

History

Wow! A template I created has become so popular that it has been protected. How ironic, as I am no longer an admin and cannot even change it myself! :-) --Uncle Ed 12:04, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, frustrating isn't it? To not be able to edit the templates you created yourself. Happened to me some times too. The worst thing is if some edit makes them malfunction and you have to sit there with a {{editprotected}} request for 1-2 days waiting for it to be fixed. :((
--David Göthberg (talk) 09:54, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
Is there any way to count how many pages are using this template? I estimate it to be in the thousands. I need to know, because employers ask about my Wikipedia programming contributions all the time. --Uncle Ed (talk) 16:17, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
I stopped counting at 50,000, so it's at least that many, possibly far more. Maybe there is a better way of counting, but you can use this link to see the first 5,000 pages to include it, and keep clicking "next 5,000" until you get to the end, keeping track of how many times you click. Keep in mind that this number will also include articles that use templates taht themselves use this one, such as {{age in years and days}}. It will also include some pages that link to this template rather than include it, but those will be negligible in the final number. Let us know if you do end up counting it out! --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 18:34, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

"Age/nts" and "Age in days/nts"

Hi Uncle Ed and everyone else interested in these templates. (I have no idea how they work, I just stumbled on them.) Usually we don't use subpages for actual deployed templates, only for testing (sandboxes). So to avoid that some trigger happy admin deletes them I suggest that:

Or whatever naming you prefer that doesn't involve a subpage. The /doc pages will need moving too. --David Göthberg (talk) 09:51, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Bizarre interaction with nts template

See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Bizarre interaction between age and nts templates. —Steve Summit (talk) 01:26, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Calculating the age of an inanimate object (esp. buildings, organisations or associations) - a better way than using {{age}}?

I've been doing some minor updates to an article, and one of these changes includes a date revision. I'd like to make this automatic, so I was thinking of using a template tag combined with the disclaimer "accurate as of {{FULLDATE}}". However, the regular 'age' tag is a bit clunky for this purpose, and using one of the other tags is a bit of overkill too because exact dates aren't always known for associations (for e.g., the year of inception may be known but the day and date may be either unknown or irrelevant).

I've tried 'age' without the month and day variables, but wikipedia expects them all. Is there a way to just show an age solely calculated with a supplied year? I think it may exist but I've missed it somewhere in the documentation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christopherwoods (talkcontribs) 01:18, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Leo Tolstoy's Birthday

{{editprotected}} The only problem I have with the Leo Tolstoy page is his date of birth. Every other place I look, including books and internet sources, says he was born on August 28, 1828, not September 9. If I am wrong please let me know your reasoning. Thank you. Hi ! my name is lekha washington and the birthdate on this article about my is wrongly and constantly changed to 1980. I am a 1986 born, and i believe this is due to a misprinted newspaper article about me. I would request that you change it to the correct date, as it affects my work as an actor. Thanks much!

Documentation of parameters

Just wanted to point out that it is not documented that the {{age}} template can be used without knowing the exact date. That is, it can return a whole number of years. example: Baby boomers are typically between 59–60 and 77–78 years old. Tstrobaugh (talk) 17:19, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

can you pretty please with a cherry on top change the age becouse 2011 - 1952 = 59 Douglas Adams was 59 at time of his death not 49

87.210.37.191 (talk) 21:13, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Not done According to Douglas Adams, he died in 2001, not 2011. 2001 - 1952 = 49. If you need to discuss this further, please post at Talk:Douglas Adams. Anomie 02:54, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Misplaced edit requests

It looks like this template may have a problem with misplaced edit requests, due to people somehow ending up at Template:Age trying to change an age and then using the not-too-helpful "Submit an edit request" link. If this is true, something could be done here along the lines of what was done for Template:Reflist to direct these users to a more appropriate place. If there is consensus, request that Template:Editnotices/Protection/Template:Age be created with the appropriate message. Anomie 03:08, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

I think that the message concerned is either Template:Editnotices/Protection/Template:Reflist or Template:Editnotices/Page/Template talk:Reflist. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:40, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
Ok, this page is not very active and I'm sick of the misplaced edit requests. I boldly put a notice at Template:Editnotices/Protection/Template:Age. Anomie 19:38, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Edit request on 3 April 2012

I went to elementary school with Tommy. He was one year older tha me and one grade ahead of me. I am 64 years old. His correct age should be 65, having been born in 1947 rather than 1951.

Leo86752 (talk) 23:33, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

If you enter {{age|1947|1|1}} you get 77, so I'm not sure what problem you're having. Could you please show us what went wrong? —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 00:18, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
Presumably Tommy's article has the date of birth as 1951 rather than 1947. But without knowing which article that is, there's not much we can do. At any rate, this discussion really belongs on the talk page of that article. Anomie 16:53, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

for the age on the Gerard Way page to be changed to 35 Alienheiress (talk) 12:52, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

There is no need to change the template - it updates the age in the article automatically, so, as today is Gerard Way's birthday, the article now shows "35". JohnCD (talk) 13:19, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

I am writing to let you know of an error when it comes to joan jett`s date of birth. On her first official website it showed her date of birth as the 22 of september 1960 not 1958 as is shown on her wikipedia page. If it possible can you rectify this error.

in the article on Gospel singer Washington Phillips, if the dates for his birth and death are correct, he lived to be 74, not 73. if so, ‘Age’ should be changed to 74.
