Template wishlist

Some things that would be nice for the template, if I or someone else finds time:

• Use information entered through |rptForm= to state the type of report/file being referenced. Will require assembling a list of recognized report types and their working OLMS database retrieval equivalents. The most common equivalent will be LM2Form→Form LM-2 Labor Organization Annual Report. There are several other types of forms, and some may be a bit esoteric.
• Some way to directly link broader summaries/lists of an organization's reports, rather than only the reports themselves. Currently to see other reports requires taking the organization's file number, searching for it, then navigating these search results until the desired information is found.
• Some way to identify if linked document is a PDF, maybe using {{PDFlink}}. Would require another parameter, as the generated links currently do not themselves indicate file format. (Might relate to below item if different formats link to different HTTPS sources; would probably still require a parameter.)
• Use of HTTPS connection where possible. Currently, the template links via http://kcerds.dol-esa.gov/query/orgReport.do as this seems to universally provide any type of requested report and attachment I've thrown at it. I'd found one that provides PDFs over HTTPS: https://cslxwep1.dol-esa.gov/Disclosure/PDFDisplayer. Are there other possibilities? Maybe something linked from https://cslxwep1.dol-esa.gov/Disclosure/?

Linking attachments apparently doesn't currently work after all:

• US Department of Labor, Office of Labor-Management Standards. File number 000-342. Report submitted November 29, 2012.

Should return a PDF giving additional details for the National Education Association's union reports. Currently returns 500 error. (Plus, if it did work, calling the document a "report" is confusing.) djr13 (talk) 13:41, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Cite report

Thanks for looking into this. I'm not sure "title" is the best place to put "file number"; the file number is an identifier for an organization, which can cover many different types of reports and attachments under various titles.

Also, the citation really probably should link to the OLMS search page if nothing else, as a fail-safe, giving context to the file number. It'd be nice if I could find a way to direct-link search results for a file number, but no luck so far. djr13 (talk) 19:56, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

The title would be optimally "generated" based on what is input for |rptForm=, as I mentioned in the "wishlist" above. This would require a list of probably (hopefully) less than a dozen acceptable form types. The most common, given current use of the template, will be by far LM-2 reports, but I've also so far encountered a couple LM-3 and LM-4 reports (IWW, GIAA and HAU) and a LM-21 report (West Liberty Foods...actually cites a report filed by Labor Information Services). I've attempted "attachment"s (which can be anything from addendums to reports, to audit reports, to attached constitution/bylaws) but these appear broken with the current link method. djr13 (talk) 20:30, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Looking at this edit, for example, the title before you applied this template was given as "Labor Information Service LM-21 filing 2009". JavaScript required to view HTML reports

I've noticed that JavaScript is required to view HTML reports. PDFs work fine. This is a totally arbitrary and unnecessary status, all the data is in the HTML, but is styled by default to be hidden, with the JavaScript only serving to disable this hiding. If styling is disabled in the browser, the page can be read, though the tables aren't quite formatted as nicely. Hilariously, this hidden-by-default styling also hides the JavaScript warning, leaving an apparently totally blank page.

There's nothing we can do on our end, I just thought it was worth mentioning for web accessibility/compatibility reasons. OLMS would need to be asked to improve its site. djr13 (talk) 18:17, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
