Style overrides
edit{{editprotected}}
Per this discussion, please remove the lines beginning "1=" and "4=" from the switch statement. There is no practical reason for comics infoboxes to use different styling from the {{infobox}} defaults, and the decision to implement that in the first place was arbitrary. Changing it here will correct the majority of these templates at once. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:19, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
- A few things...
- Infobox width is something that is within reason to be determines by use and/or content project level. This is part of the "1" line.
- Background color, as long as it does not create accessibility issues, rests at the same point.
- Some of the infoboxes that this affects fall under WikiProject Anime and Manga which does have a different, consistently used infobox dress. This is reflected, in part, in "1" and "4".
- "Style overrides" is coming off as a bit of a pejorative term here. The base template is open to a style being set. If it weren't the parameters used here either would not be documented or would not be accessible. I honestly don't think that was the intent, or that it would be something widely supported.

- None of that establishes why the comics project overrides the defaults. It seems simply to have been adopted with minimal discussion. The reference to the Animanga project doesn't make sense to me when that project's templates don't use the defaults present here, in particular the background colour which is the major reason for this request. Considering that this is a deliberate and arbitrary deviation from the defaults (used widely throughout the project, in particular the background colour), I rather think that the onus is on those defending that situation to make their case. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 18:22, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
- You may want to look at {{Infobox animanga}} and its components before you dismiss it out of hand.
- You may also want to rethink about enshrining the defaults. This does seem to be one of the cases where looking at how other infoboxes are used and structured.
- It seems that it is acceptable for infoboxes to be used to visually identify articles under a related subject.
- It also seems acceptable for them to be structured to present the information.
- IF those are false assumptions, it seems silly to allow the generic template to be adjustable. And if it is the case that there is a guideline that only the default setting be used and policed by the Infobox Project, I'd like to see the strong, Wikipedia wide consensus that provided for that.
- If they aren't false assumptions, it looks like a discussion is needed to determine just where personal taste is acceptable to either add or remove such grouping identification.
- Now. It was pointed out when you when you broached this at the Comics Project talk page that the infobox size of 24en is preferable when dealing with this material. Having looked at what you pointed out about the bulk of the Biography 'boxes, the relevant section here was reworked to reflect that project's take on the 'boxes - that was setting the 22en size and 100% text size for the body.

- One by one:
- The argument about {{infobox animanga}} is a red herring. Its styling is not controlled by this template. I can't propose that every infobox is rewritten simultaneously, but if the arguments used here apply there then I'll get round to it eventually. For now it's irrelevant to this particular request.
- That styling is not forbidden is true. That templates under a particular WikiProject's purview are better looking consistent with each other than inconsistent with each other is also true. However, these conditions are readily satisfied by using the defaults. Being consistent with one another most certainly does not imply being inconsistent with everything else, which is presently the only argument I can see advanced for using a different background colour (this is AFAIK the only infobox set which does this).
- This isn't being requested on behalf of the infoboxes WikiProject. It's being requested because of a desire for Wikipedia to present an attractive and consistent front to readers which does not require them to understand the various walled gardens which we've invented to organise content creation behind the scenes. That this is still AFAIK the first time that the background colour has even been discussed suggests that it was only ever in place because of WP:SILENCE, which hardly needs a "strong, Wikipedia wide consensus" to challenge it.
- The sky blue background is my primary motivator here, as before. I've yet to see even scant evidence that 24em makes for a significant improvement to the look of comics biographies, but for the sake of not complicating matters I don't mind if that's retained for the time being.

- Per that discussion? Which either ended with no consensus to change it or a majority against. This is a project-wide issue affecting thousands of pages and I think if you want consensus then it'd be best to open this discussion up over there. That previous discussion certainly isn't grounds for changing anything here. (Emperor (talk) 16:46, 22 June 2010 (UTC))
- Discussion is not a poll. There are absolutely no good arguments for the present styling, and if we required a majority to do anything on here then on low-participation discussions any progress could be blocked simply by people refusing to respond. That's what we had there. If replies aren't forthcoming I'll be re-requesting editprotected. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:13, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
As there is ongoing discussion I have disabled the {{editprotected}} request for now. Please reactivate when you have an agreement. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:45, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
- It's not really an "ongoing discussion"; it was hashed out a month ago before being archived due to a lack of comment from editor responsible for the current styling. I'll re-enable in a week or so unless there's a pressing reason not to, as it's already been brought to the attention of both the primary proponent and the most relevant WikiProject. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 23:01, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Ping. Another month has gone by, and yet again it appears no replies are forthcoming to the points raised. It is unreasonable to suggest at this point that sufficient notice has not been given, so I'll be raising an editprotected for this in a few days. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:32, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
A decade and change down the road and the background rule applied for the whole infobox is negatively impacting the mobile apps' styling of pages for their dark mode implementation. While we could retain it, it's close enough now to the default due to drift that I have removed it.
I've also removed entirely the rules for |4, as the uses only used the default, which was the background of this series of templates. Which is the same issue as above.

- I've also converted this template to Template:Comics infobox sec/styles.css and deployed it to the using infoboxes. I expect use to drop to 0 and I'll remove its functionality when that happens (or hunt down why it doesn't). Izno (talk) 05:10, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
