Template talk:Commons category-inline

A bug in this template

At the bottom of the article titled Chlorine dioxide under "External links", the first time says "Media related to Chlorine dioxide at Wikimedia Commons". The capitalization of the initial "C" in "chlorine" appears to be inconsistent with the conventions of WP:MOS, so I clicked on "edit" and found this: {{Commonscatinline}} I had not seen this template before. Can and should this template be edited to fix this? Michael Hardy (talk) 04:56, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

It's not a bug: it's an inherent ambiguity of the article title. The Lua code cannot know whether the article title is a proper noun or not, so it simply uses the capitalized form. This has been true for many years. For any article where the title is not a proper noun and shouldn't be capitalized, you can supply a second parameter to the template to display the correct form. set |lcfirst=1. I might've encountered the same thing editing at Violet Keene. When using |1= and explicitly beginning with a lowercase character, the template apparently triggers Pi bot (talk · contribs) to think there's no matching category. Can a fix be implememted to unconfuse lowercase capitalization of the variable in |1=? — Fourthords | =Λ= | 14:46, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

It triggered Pi bot because the category is not "Category:photographs by Violet Keene", it's "Category:Photographs by Violet Keene". I changed the page to use {{Commons category-inline|Photographs by Violet Keene|photographs by Violet Keene}}, which I think is what you were looking for? —Joeyconnick (talk) 19:59, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

only contains Commons category-inline in external links, delete?

i come across external links which contain only this template. i assumed this template was created to mingle with other links in external links section instead of seperate box (commons category template). is it reasonable to delete external links section with Commons category-inline template and update template commons category in other section?<_>jindam, vani (talk) 16:57, 18 January 2023 (UTC)

Please don't do that. The usage you are referring to is explicitly encouraged in the Manual of Style:

If box-type templates are not good, either because they result in a long sequence of right-aligned boxes hanging off the bottom of the article, or because there are no external links except sister project ones, then consider using "inline" templates, such as {{Commons category-inline}} in the "External links" section, so that links to sister projects appear as list items

"Inconsistent wikidata for Commons category"

This template places some pages into Category:Inconsistent wikidata for Commons category, while {{Commons category}} with the same arguments does not. Compare cc and cci. jlwoodwa (talk) 22:29, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

This category uses a Lua implementation of error checking at Module:Commons link that may be slightly stricter than the template implementation at {{Commons category}}. I'll investigate and tell you what I find. — hike395 (talk) 01:31, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Here's the deal. {{Commons category}} uses Module:WikidataIB to look up wikidata entries. It looks sequentially at a number of properties in the associated Wikidata page, stopping when it finds one. {{Commons category-inline}} uses Module:Commons link, which doesn't stop at the first working property, but looks at all of them. If there is any inconsistency between them, it gives up and flags a warning message.

Wikimedian of the Year has an associated Wikidata entry d:Q17525053. That data entry is inconsistent. The Commons sitelink is c:Category:Wikimedian of the Year, but the "Commons Category" properties is c:Category:Wikipedian of the Year (the latter is the parent category of the former). This warning is easily fixed by cleaning up Wikidata, which I can do. But I wanted to explain where the warning message came from. — hike395 (talk) 01:49, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 18 February 2024

I would like to suggest combining this template with the multi-category abilities of {{Commons category multi}}, without the need to create a separate Template:Commons category multi-inline (similarly, {{Commons category}} and {{Commons category multi}} may also be combined). As the |2= parameter of {{Commons category-inline}} is currently being used for a label, I would suggest renaming it to |label1=, and so forth.

The reason for this request may be exampled with the Teddy (garment) article referring to both teddy and camiknickers for the same garment, while currently they are separate commons sub-categories (Category:Teddy and Category:Camiknickers); see also Category talk:Women's underwear#Disorganized subcats for a related discussion. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 21:44, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

I solved the problem on Teddy by merging the categories on Commons, which is probably the best solution in most cases. However I support your proposal in general. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:30, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
