Template talk:Copy section to Wikiquote

Created as an alternative to {{Move to Wikiquote}}, this template was made to be used in article which, while encyclopedic, possess sections better suited for the sister project Wikiquote.org and/or any existing entry there. For example, when a section once made to be a simple example of notible dialouge turns into a quotefarm. Best cases for use are when an existing Wikiquote entry is actually much shorter than the Wikipedia section. Move section to Wikiquote is now Copy section to Wikiquote

Per Template_talk:Move_to_Wiktionary#Move_vs._copy, and for reasons I'll explain here, all the "Move to" transwiki templates are being moved to "Copy to". Putting this template in place does not cause an article to be moved, it causes it to be copied. Once copied, the original might be deleted from wikipedia, or it might be rewritten, expanded, etc. Calling this "Move section to Wikiquote" makes people who come across the template think that the template will cause the deletion of the article, and often leads people to remove the template inappropriately. Giving it the proper name ends that. If there are mentions in various articles and help files and such around wikipedia which mention "Move section to Wikiquote" which will need to be changed, I will do that after some time has passed, waiting first to see if there is some major disagreement to this change. --Xyzzyplugh 01:45, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Howdy. Guy who created the template here. I have no objections. I'd have liked the text of the actual template changed to match your move, though. Ah well. BTW, you don't need to lowercase redirects. It's standard, albeital somewhat expectional practice to have them completely capitalized. You see, bots might take one look at a lowercase redirect and go "No. Delete." At least, that's what I'm told. Anyway, thanks for helping to bring my little template in line with all the rest. ACS (Wikipedian); Talk to the Ace. Yeah, I did the lowercasing of the redirects for an odd reason. For some reason, when I first make the redirect in the process of moving templates, it doesn't seem to work properly, and the articles with the redirected templates in them don't show up in the right categories. Editing the redirect message and changing it seems to alert the wikipedia servers or software or whatever that it's time to apply the redirect and put the articles into the right categories. I've moved a bunch of these templates, and had to do this every time, for some unknown reason. I don't understand it, but it works when I do it. --Xyzzyplugh 12:57, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Proper crediting

Wikiquote recently has been wrestling with problems of Wikipedians dumping massive amounts of quotes into articles without using the transwiki process or bothering to specifically identify where the material is coming from. ("From Wikipedia article" ignores the frequent case of the WQ article having a different title from the WP article.) Although we expect that editors believe they are being helpful, this ignoring of Wikimedia requirements and GFDL license issues is anything but. Such material is often deleted or reverted because we don't have enough regular editors to fix all the problems these bulk transfers entail.

We are currently trying to deal with this by asking editors AT LEAST to include something like the following in the edit summary for each edit:

transferred quotes from [[w:To Sir, with Love]]

which will display the following in the Wikiquote article's history:

transferred quotes from w:To Sir, with Love

(Note that the above link may not work here, but it will on Wikiquote.) Assuming nothing happens to the cited Wikipedia articles (which should be true, at least in the short term, for transferring errant or undesirable quote sections from otherwise solid articles), we figure this follows the general GFDL expectation that any website use of Wikipedia material include a link to the original WP article.

If you can't follow the admittedly cumbersome transwiki process, adding this edit-summary link will at least follow the crediting requirements for non-Wikimedia sites. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation. ~ Jeff Q (talk) (Jeff Q on Wikiquote 19:50, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
