Form 5010 PDF generation

edit

I found the link for Form 5010 PDF did not work (error 404 no file or directory found) for an airport (RNT). So I went to the airport master record web page and clicked on the PDF icon in the upper right-hand corner. That resulted in the PDF getting generated and then the webpage is redirected to the direct link to the Form 5010 PDF. My suspicion is that when a PDF becomes outdated that it is deleted from their system and only regenerated when the first person clicks on the PDF link for the form, at which the PDF document is created and kept around until it is no longer up-to-date. What that means is that instead of directly linking to the PDF file itself, which may or may not yet exist, the template should link to the url that generates the PDF if it is needed.

So, taking Renton Municipal Airport (RNT) for an example. Instead of linking to http://www.gcr1.com/5010ReportRouter/RNT.pdf, the link should be to https://www.gcr1.com/5010ReportRouter/default.aspx?airportID=RNT.

[http://www.gcr1.com/5010ReportRouter/{{{ID|{{{id}}}}}}.pdf Form 5010]

should change to be:

[https://www.gcr1.com/5010ReportRouter/default.aspx?airportID={{{ID|{{{id}}}}}} Form 5010]

While making the update, I also recommend removing the code that generates the text and link for "PDF": (PDF). Do we really need to include that? In my opinion it just clutters up the page.

@Archer1234: in your examples above the "instead of" example of a broken link appears to be working fine for me, is this still an issue? — xaosflux Talk 19:38, 14 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Xaosflux, I suspect this is a Catch-22. In putting together a coherent argument with example Archer1234 has fixed that instance. The documentation links to Ridge Soaring Gliderport for which the 5010 link in Ridge Soaring Gliderport#References returns a 404. I won't try the fix or again you won't see the problem. Tried it on 13M / Aeronut Park Balloonport. Problem & fix were as described.

This template is generating a 404 error when I click on the default link for every airport I've tried, although the PDF link still works. GCR seems to have changed their website so the user has to manually input the airport identifier every time; if there's some sort of permalink for individual airports, I can't find it. Carguychris I am having the same problem as of today, so it seems the issue is still not resolved. I was editing the Charleston Executive Airport page and noted it will generate the PDF of form 5010 but will not link to the GCR1 page. Pinging Xaosflux and Cabayi since they were involved above with the same issue last year. N75746 (talk) 19:08, 14 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Carguychris, N75746, I've contacted their support email address asking for the new URL format, if any. It may be that they no longer want to allow deep-linking. Cabayi (talk) 20:58, 14 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Cabayi Any word from GCR? Seems the Form 5010 still generates so if we can't get an updated link maybe we can update this form to just show the PDF. N75746 (talk) 13:34, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
N75746, not a word. I've put a stripped version in the sandbox. Check the testcases and let me know if you're happy. Cabayi (talk) 17:50, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Cabayi Looks good to me, thanks for doing it. I'd have done it myself but still learning how template editing works :) N75746 (talk) 18:50, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Have noticed that gcr1.com now redirects to airportiq5010.com

I presume this could, although unlikely, lead to some major link problems for a short while if that domain is lost.

For example, as is currently linked in template at my time of posting: "https://www.gcr1.com/5010ReportRouter/default.aspx?airportID=43A" redirects to "https://www.airportiq5010.com/5010ReportRouter/43A.pdf".
