editMay I suggest that we only include the xxxxx.html name? So that the goldbook.iupac.org is assumed. Since it's a template should we not reduce all unnecessary typing?
I think we also need to check if the style of the citation conforms with the common {{cite book}}, {{cite news}}, {{cite web}} style for consistency. --Rifleman 82 02:39, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, I shall fix this in a moment! In fact, we just need the @##### file number, the ".html" can be assumed as well. Physchim62 (talk) 08:58, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
- Would a knowledgeable person please expand the template (how is this done?) to include the ISBN, edition, etc. to conform more closely to the recommended citation style and the other IUPAC templates? Thanks! -Shootbamboo (talk) 18:45, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Citation incomplete; punctuation inconsistent with common citation templates
editBased on the example below
IUPAC, Compendium of Chemical Terminology, 2nd ed. (the "Gold Book") (1997). Online corrected version: (2006–) "Bond-dissociation energy". doi:10.1351/goldbook.B00699
I observed a few irregularities:
- The online Gold Book recommends more information in citing the Gold Book than this template outputs, especially identification of individual compilers.
- The template should add, and the documentation should recommend using, a
|revision-date=
. This is especially important in citing online sources, which often are regularly or irregularly revised. Using|accessdate=
does not suffice because that does not directly identify the version cited. - According to the documentation, use of
|accessdate=
is optional. That parameter does not work. - According to the documentation, the DOI "Will automatically be generated if there is a
|file=
specified." That does not happen. - Finally, the standard citation templates, by default, use a period (full stop) as the delimiter. This template uses commas.

As the current webmaster of the IUPAC Gold Book, I would like to recommend an update to the format of this template. The new version of the website (https://goldbook.iupac.org) went live in July 2019 and does not use the same URL forma, and while I have implemented a set of mod_rewrite rules to accommodate the change in format, it would be much better if all links from wikipedia were via the DOI. Therefore, I am requesting that the link to the HTML page in the template and be replaced by the DOI link. The current link to the DOI can stay with the format.

Needs updating
edit{{GoldBookRef |title=petroleum coke |file=P04522}}
renders as
Compendium of Chemical Terminology, 2nd ed. (the "Gold Book") (1997). Online corrected version: (2006-) "petroleum coke". doi:10.1351/goldbook.P04522
But following the reference we find that the entry states its citation as
Citation: 'petroleum coke' in IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology, 3rd ed. International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry; 2006. Online version 3.0.1, 2019. https://doi.org/10.1351/goldbook.P04522
The template as it stands doesn't even support entering the edition or year manually. It should
- default to the latest edition and year (currently 3rd ed 2006)
- default to the latest online version (currently 3.0.1 of 2019)
- allow the edition, year, online version and online year to be entered, overriding the defaults
- support a "date=" parameter. For example, the entry I cite states "Last revised: February 24, 2014".
For this particular citation I have preferred not to use the template, but instead:
{{cite encyclopedia|encyclopedia=IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology (the Gold Book)|publisher=International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry|edition=3rd|title=petroleum coke|id=P04522|date=2006|orig-date=Online edition 3.0.1 of 2019; article date 24 February 2014 | url=https://goldbook.iupac.org/terms/view/P04522}}
Alternatively, the citation at the bottom of the article could be simply copied and pasted, without template.
