Rhodesia

edit

Rhodesia never had a Governor General because Ian Smith's Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) was regarded as illegal by the international community, and the legitimate representative of the Queen was the British-appointed Governor Sir Humphrey Gibbs.

Moving the article

edit

Would anybody overly object, if I moved this Template to Template:Governors-General of the Commonwealth realms? GoodDay (talk) 20:22, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

The move has been done. GoodDay (talk) 21:02, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ireland

edit

The Irish Free State had GGs until 11 December 1936; thereafter the IFS had no GG; from 28 December 1937, "Ireland" (no "Republic of" etc) had no GG; then in 1949 Ireland was excluded from the BCN...The topic of its name is well worne etc....And there are thosse who don't like to use it..but it is particularly inappropriate to refer to the Republic of Ireland as if it was the successor of the IFS here when the Irish state continued on as a British dominion under the name ireland for some 12 years...84.203.77.232 (talk) 21:15, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

-only it didn't; they just used the British monarch for the purposes of external relations. Ireland presently is still oficially called just 'Ireland' or 'Eire'; the 1948 Act just stated unequivocably that the state was a republic, but did not actually change the name of the polity. The British monarch was NOT monarch of Ireland 1936-1949, but Ireland was still formally 'part of His Majesty's dominions' because the British monarch still represented it for the purposes of external relations.. Don't forget, Ireland during th 1936-1949 period had a president too. JWULTRABLIZZARD (talk) 18:18, 10 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Template:Governors-General of the Commonwealth realmsTemplate:Governors-General of Commonwealth countries – As has been discussed at length on the Commonwealth Realm discussion page, Ireland and one or two other countries never became "Realms". They left the Commonwealth before the term was used. The Commonwealth Realm article makes some, albeit inadequate, representation of this; the template misleadingly ignores it altogether. I suggest the template be renamed "Governors-General of Commonwealth countries". Frenchmalawi (talk) 17:35, 15 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think the name "Template:Governors-General of the Commonwealth" suggests that the Commonwealth has a Governor-General. Like a President. So I preferred my suggestion. But if you really think yours is better, I would prefer yours to what is presently used. I will support you if you make the change. Frenchmalawi (talk) 23:12, 15 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I see what you mean. I don't mind whether the requested move template above is removed and the template moved now, or whether we wait for a week for others to comment before moving the template and closing the move request. DrKiernan (talk) 11:29, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Agreed; let's leave it a week and see if any one else has ideas. Could I ask you to do the move whenever you like then. I think you'd do a better job at it than me. Thanks. Frenchmalawi (talk) 23:50, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. A definite improvement, and I have no better suggestion. Agree it's appropriate for DrKiernan to perform the move although they are involved, as it's uncontroversial. I would and could perform it myself rather than contributing to the discussion, but I have no experience with template moves. Let me know if I can help.
