Organization?

I'm noticing that the organization is a bit weird. I'm going ahead and moving all scientific programmables in the "Other" section into the scientific programmable section.

However, do we want to organize this by series (Classic, Woodstock, Spice, Coconut, Voyager, Pioneer, Charlemagne, and then the 48 on), function, or something else? Right now, we're using a mix, which is inconsistent. Bhtooefr (talk) 10:13, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

I would suggest the following general order (in decreasing priority):

• Type (sorted by functionality)
• (Prefix - no at present) (sorted up alphabetically, but may become important when Prime successors materialize)
• Number (sorted upwards, f.e. 9g before 28C)
• Postfixes (sorted up chronologically, e.g. 39gs before 39gII)
• else (sorted upwards by length of name, e.g. 48S before 48SX)

Capitalization of product name prefix HP, hp or Hp?

Hi. Can you please stop changing model names of HP calculators to use "hp" instead? The official web pages and user manuals for those instruments universally use "HP", they are universally referred to in other sources as "HP", and MOS:TM and MOS:ACRO clearly say to use uppercase for trademarks/acronyms. I wish you'd be correct since I prefer the uppercase form as well. But the capitalization of Hewlett-Packard product names changed over time, and was (mostly) consistent in its usage for products of a give time in both, their product labeling and the usage in original docs, including the printed manuals. I was correcting only those product names, which were written in lowercase (based on the actual product labels as well as the original documentation).

Our MOS is of little help here since it is inconsistent. Depending on where you look, it suggests standard-case, lowercase or uppercase. While the "hp" certainly stands for "Hewlett-Packard", it is not used as an abbreviation here (as f.e. in their logo), but as part of a product's proper name, possibly also as a trade name. We do not normally change the case of proper names, but sometimes we do for trade names, if not consistently used. When these calculators were still in production, Hewlett-Packard used the lower-case in all documents directly related to this product (not sure about other products). They have meanwhile changed back to use upper-case for new products (and their current web-site reflects this). Nevertheless, if you check the original documents of the timeframe relevant for the corresponding product (still downloadable on their web-site), they are in lower-case. Strictly following the MOS, we'd most certainly have to apply standard-case (that is "Hp") then - which looks ugly, and isn't used by anyone at all (and it would be inventing a new form similar to use "HP" for calculators named "hp something", or vice versa). For historical correctness and utmost accuracy (after all, we are an encyclopedia!), I prefer to use the original spelling and capitalization (that is, "hp" in some cases, "HP" in others), whereas for consistency within Wikipedia you prefer to change this to "HP" regardless of how the product was actually named.

Thinking about it, I suggest to drop the "HP" and "hp" from the navigation template so we can avoid (or at least reduce) the hassle.
