1981 Cape Breton coal strike

edit

Would the Cape Breton coal strike of 1981 make an appropriate addition? I notice that the article series is already quite long, so it would be understandable to keep it fairly restricted, and Nova Scotia isn't my main editing area so I'm not well-versed in what is considered the most important events. @Julius177 just add it. Abebenjoe (talk) 00:54, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

C0-op Movement

edit

Someone misspelled the abbreviation for the co-operative movement as "Co Op." That is not the consensus spelling in the Canadian co-operative movement. It is "co-op." Abebenjoe (talk) 00:56, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

"Black Friday" 13 October 1967

edit

"Black Friday" the Friday, 13 October 1967 announcement by Hawker Siddeley that it would shut down the Sydney Steel Plant was Canada-wide news. The plant was scheduled to be shuttered by April 1968. The "Parade of Concern" on Sunday, 19 November 1967 was the largest demonstration in Cape Breton Island's history, with thousands marching to the former harness racing track to hear government officials pledge support for the citizens of Cape Breton. It concerned both Prime Minister Pearson and Premier G.I. Smith to the point that these governments nationalized the plant. Both the plant and the nationalized coal mines were closed at the turn of the 21st century. This was a huge issue historically for Industrial Cape Breton: it would no longer be "industrial."
