Caveats

edit

I updated the template to try to incorporate more of the normal features. Though, as far as I know, magnify image can't be displayed currently. The short-term workaround is to use an "info" text link instead, but maybe MediaWiki:Common.css could be modified to allow this to be displayed as a background-image?

Also, normally the thumbnail image has a class="thumbimage" on it to add a second gray border around it. I added another div inside to simulate this (especially because there isn't necessarily just a single image inside the imageframe), but it only seems to work properly in non-MSIE browsers, possibly due to the MSIE box bug? --Interiot 18:12, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Rendering on Safari

edit

This template seems to overlap text under Safari in Mac OS 10.5.2 as discovered in Regions of Peru. Any chance of a solution? The Rambling Man (talk) 19:23, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merging with Template:Multiple image

edit

If someone has time, I suggest merging this template with Template:Multiple image. The two are somewhat different, but they share enough similarities that I think it will be beneficial to unify them both under one template rather than two. Among other things, it will certainly make it easier to maintain and add on to in the future. Gary King (talk) 06:37, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Difference between right and upright?

edit

What is the difference between right and upright for thumbnail alignment? Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 09:17, 1 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

they are orthogonal parameters. the upright parameter is used to set the thumbnail size for tall images. the right parameter is used to float the image to the right. Frietjes (talk) 17:21, 1 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
for example, try the following eight

the upright versions will all be smaller, since the width is smaller (which is better for tall images). Frietjes (talk) 17:24, 1 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay, got it. Thanks! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 12:13, 5 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
you can also use |upright=num where num is a scaling factor, which multiplies the default width (typically 220). so, |upright=1.5 will by 50% larger than the default width. Frietjes (talk) 18:55, 5 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Width expands to accommodate caption text on one line

edit

Compare:

Markup Renders as

Example usage
Markup Renders as

Example usage with a long caption hey look how long this is wow

This seems like a bug. The text in the caption should get wrapped over multiple lines to fit in the width dictated by the content, right? The template docs say that if the width parameter isn't specified, the width is "Automatic, based on content". (emphasis mine) Dindon~enwiki (talk) 21:36, 22 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Dealing with that automatically is a hard problem in CSS. The real image frames on Wikipedia manually specify the width in pixels of the .thumbinner element and unfortunately I think that is the best method. Of course if you know the content is at least 500px (e.g.) you could wrap the caption in a 500px div, but I'm not aware of a general solution. User:GKFXtalk 09:58, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
To avoid this problem; you must use width parameter to specify the width of frame. --Great Brightstar (talk) 06:43, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the responses. Given the flakiness of automatic width, I've edited the docs to describe the width param as "suggested" rather than "optional". Colin M (talk) 17:02, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Removing File:Desc-i.svg

edit

This image is already overrided by .thumbcaption class, so it's unnecessary to use that, and I was already removed that in sandbox page. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 07:04, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

I got the solution for this so there is no need to remove that.--Great Brightstar (talk) 07:38, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Improving this template to show File:Desc-i.svg correctly

edit

I made an improve to this template via removing magnify class, which overrides File:Desc-i.svg by an icon for file description page. The source code is already available at template sandbox page. --Great Brightstar (talk) 07:38, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Great Brightstar: This page is semi-protected, not template-protected. You should be able to make the edit - why place an edit request? ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 15:37, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Why is text formatted incorrectly inside an image frame?

edit

When I display a group of images inside a frame using Multiple image, the image caption appears too small:

First caption
Second caption

But the caption displays normally when I put it outside the frame:

Players are cautioned with a yellow card and sent off with a red card.

Is it possible to display the captions correctly inside this frame? Jarble (talk) 16:09, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

It appears that imageframe applies a class that reduces font-size to 94% of normal, and multiple image reduces captions to 88% of normal. Increasing the caption to 106% of normal should get you back to the usual text size:
First caption
Second caption
There may be a better way. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:35, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
This bug has been fixed, so the text now displays with the correct size. Jarble (talk) 18:03, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

What's up with graphs not displaying?

Hatnote?
