Position of {{KO}} column

Give me one reason that the W-(KO)-L-D-NC format is superior to W-L-D-NC (KO) format. ArcTheLad 00:28, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

As it looks more natural and better that W-(wins by KO)-L-D-NC for me so I removed {{KO}} under the {{Win}} column, but I am not sure that you accept it or not. Anyway, I agree that {{name}} was removed into statsbox. I like it. --Yappakoredesho 09:58, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Its doesn't bother me either way. Although I believe the no contest part should be optional Maya Levy 06:23, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Hometown listing

There should be a hometown listing, especially for boxers that are popular for their hometowns but born in a different location (Marvin Hagler, Winky Wright, Arturo Gatti, Joe Frazier, Thomas Hearns) Miss Maya Levy 06:09, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

I definitely agree. In fact I wasn't aware it had been removed until just now. Especially since Boxrec goes by hometown and birthplace, which for most boxers, are different as well as significant. Btl 07:01, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Actually maybe adopting BoxRec's entire setup is better. At least for where "Weight" and "Style" are used. "Rated At" and "Stance" make much better sense both boxing terminology wise and layman understanding. I'm going to take down the requested change box until somebody replies to this with any thoughts. Btl 07:26, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
I think "Hometown listing" should not be in the infobox because it always changed in life. It should be somewhere in an article (not in the box).--Yappakoredesho 10:41, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
Well I think to have nationality in the box, which suits foreign born fighters, is akin to having hometown listed, which would suit American born fighters who fight and train out of specific areas of the country, which very rarely if at all change. Still, I'd concede this arguement if we could get weight and style changed and have a height listing added. Btl 03:09, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

New Listings

Outside of the immediate need for Height. Would anyone else agree to see Weight changed to Rated At, and Style changed to Stance? I have no idea who to approach and the feedback on here...has been non-existent. I'd accept criticisms, assuming anybody reads this. Btl 03:11, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

I agree that Height is important. For example I would like to add one to Wladimir Klitschko - but unable to. --TAG 17:56, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
I see no objections so I'm going to get stuck in and make the changes you suggest :-) SeveroTC 22:41, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

New unified infobox for MMA, Kickboxing, Boxing

Since there's so many fighters who have pro record under more than one method, I wanted to create a unified infobox. Check this out let me know what you guys think. Template:Infobox Martial artist biography. I've been mostly contributing on muay thai, K-1 and some boxing but it'll be cool if we could use one unified box for all those martial arts. All parameters are optional, lets say if the boxer doesn't have any kickboxing or MMA record or vise versa. I can add Stance and Reach as well or Years Active to make it more specific for Boxers, not a problem but i wanted to ask u guys before i spend more time on it. (Marty Rockatansky 20:35, 23 October 2007 (UTC))

Hometown listing - Revisited

I'd like to revisit this subject again. When listing the place of birth, one usually assumes that they are from that area, when listing their hometown, it makes it a bit more convieniant to suggest where a fighter was raised/trained instead of having to read the whole article. Even fighters from foreign countries have specific regions that they represent. For example, Julio Cesar Chavez born in Cuidad Obregon, Mexico, but represented Culiacan, Mexico for his whole professional career. For countries w/ culturally different locations like Canada, it'll be really telling if a fighter is from Quebec or one of the English provinces. Maya Levy 04:35, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Oh sorry Maya Levy, hometown will be listed as {{{fightingoutof}}} if this unified template {{Infobox Martial artist}} is used instead of {{Infobox Boxer}}. --W/mint-Talk- 14:16, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Record

Can't the record be displayed in one horizontal line (like this: "53-3-1 (43 via KOs)")? --Howard the Duck 12:15, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Addition of place of residence

I believe that residence should be added to the infobox as it is freely avaliable information that would serve only to enhance the template.--Lucy-marie (talk) 14:27, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Fictional Boxers

I've noticed this Infobox is used on Rocky Balboa. The usage guidelines don't specifically say that it can be used on fictional characters. Should this Infobox be being used in this way? --193.34.186.55 (talk) 12:38, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Please add boxrec id !

Please add boxrec_id to this template as a new parameter:

{{#if:{{{boxrec_id|}}}|'''[http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id={{{boxrec_id}}}&cat=boxer Professional boxing record (boxrec)]'''}}

Boxrec is a huge database, containing statistical information about all (or almost all) fights of all the professional boxers worldwide. Links to boxrec are featured in almost all articles about professional boxers in Wikipedia. So why not to include it into the infobox? It is for boxing like IMDB for cinema, so the parameter boxrec_id, which I would like to introduce, can be compared to the parameter imdb_id in {{Infobox Film}}. Thanks in advance! Alex Ex (talk) 18:50, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

HELLO! I REQUESTED A NEW PARAMETER ALMOST A MONTH AGO. I AM WONDERING WHY THERE IS STILL NO REPSONSE? THANKS Alex Ex (talk) 09:48, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

"Nationality" parameter question.

The purpose of this is for clarificaion on what exactly is the "Nationality" parameter referring to? Is it:

  1. Citizenship, i.e. British, Spanish, American, or
  2. Ethnic nationality, i.e. Welsh, Basque, African-American

I personally believe it's option 1, but for clarification i want to be sure as there are editors who believe it means option 2.

Secondly i also propose that the template documentation be expanded upon to properly describe what the parameter is for as the current description: "nationality — Nationality" - is woefully inadequate as a description and doesn't help sort out the above question for discussions on whether it refers to option 1 or 2.

Thus if it does refer to option 1, as i believe it does, can it be amended to something along the lines of: "nationality - Nationality (as in citizenship) of the boxer, according to the nationality laws of that country" just so that its clearer as to what it refers to? If it refers to option 2 then a similar expansion should be made for clarification.

Mabuska (talk) 10:21, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

it can be citizenship or sporting nationality or if they self-identify as a nationality. I would prefer to make it simple and go by WP:V. Ethnicity is completely unworkable in general. Wladimir Klitschko was born in Kazakhstan in the old USSR and lives in Germany and trains in Austria but I think it is pretty much accepted that he is Ukrainian. --Ruairí Óg's (talk) 15:22, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
Self-identity and ethnicity sort of go hand in hand. I'm hoping we can get outside opinion on the issue rather than us who are involved in the discussions, preferably from those who have been involved in the design and creation of this infobox as they would know best what it refers to. Whatever the response, a better clarification is needed for the infobox documentation. Mabuska (talk) 20:40, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
You mean, you would rather step up the conversation or discussion in a manner that is slanted to your POV?--Ruairí Óg's (talk) 22:14, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
Can you please stick to the topic of the discussion? Mabuska (talk) 10:38, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Go with option #1. GoodDay (talk) 13:12, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
Smacks a little of forum shopping to open this one up in another place. Basically practice over many articles (not just boxing) to to go with self-identification as to nationality. You persist in using "ethnicity" per your particular POV. Default is citizenship, but if they compete for a country (such as Scotland) then its Scottish, or if they self-identity as Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish or Northern Irish then we go with that. Its simple, its worked for years and there is no need to make such a song and dance about it. --Snowded TALK 15:13, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
Its a matter to do with the infobox not article ledes, so where else would you raise the issue Snowded other than the infobox? We're not alking about WP:MOSBIO as it doesn't cover infoboxes.
A simple request for clarification and an expansion on the woefully inadequate description provided within the infobox documentation is hardly a sin now is it and would work for the benefit of all of us.
Anyways i'd still prefer someone involved in the making of the infobox to make an opinion if they will rather than someone who is likewise involved in the debate over it. Mabuska (talk) 10:12, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Is the flagicon used? I mean, if they represent that country internationally, why not?--Львівське (говорити) 23:02, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
We've still got inconsistancies. At Joe Calzaghe we've got Welsh, British, at David Haye we've got British & at Ricky Hatton we've got English , just for examples. GoodDay (talk) 20:27, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Addition of No Decision to boxing record

I just finished a book about my cousin, George "Kid" Lavigne, boxing's first world lightweight champion from 1896 to 1899. I was editing some information on his Wiki page and tried to add a "No Decision" category to the boxing record information but it wouldn't let me. In the early days of the Queensberry rules "no decisions" were quite common so I'd like to see it added to the information. Without it, his fight total numbers don't add up. Can anyone help? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chouinard52 (talkcontribs) 20:54, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Style guidelines?

I was thinking of some style guidelines to add to the usage notes. How do these look? SeveroTC 23:03, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Style guide

Density of information

Try to always consider that an infobox exists to support an article and provide a quick synopsis of important facts. This becomes vital when considering that the amount of space available within an infobox is significantly less than that available outside of it. Adding all seventy three nicknames is highly informative, but will defeat the purpose of the infobox.

Wikilinking

As per the manual of style entry on linking, years should not be linked as they do not provide much benefit to the user. However, date of birth should be linked to enable date preferences to work - use of {{birth date and age|''year''|''month''|''date''}} and {{birth date|''year''|''month''|''date''}} will do this automatically. Linking of other entries is to be discouraged as most of these links will present themselves in the article's introduction; linking them in the infobox adds clutter and inhibits the speedy retrieval of facts.

Dates of birth and death

To help with the hCard microformat, the use of standard templates is encouraged. This currently extends to birth date templates, {{birth date and age}} for living boxers and {{birth date}} for the deceased. The hCard standard for date of death is pending.

Units of measurement

As per the manual of style the boxer's height should be in the units most common within the country they compete. Use of the {{height}} template is encouraged.

Any thoughts? SeveroTC 23:03, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

{{Height}} only allows for metres, whereas centimetres are more predominant in reliable sources. Perhaps {{htcm}} or {{convert}} (which is already used for weight) should be encouraged instead.--Gibson Flying V (talk) 03:36, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
better to just use {{convert}}. Frietjes (talk) 16:56, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
Agreed.--Gibson Flying V (talk) 22:13, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Edit Request on 10 April 2013

Request for a "years active" section for the Infobox. As is done for the Infobox martial artist. --2Nyce (talk) 22:46, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

This does not seem to have been actioned, but there was discussion about merging this template to {{Infobox martial artist}}. Perhaps the better solution is to switch to that infobox and enter years active. Dl2000 (talk) 18:46, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Addition of Religion field

Fellow Wikipedians. At Talk:Mike_Tyson#Infobox_-_religion, there is a brief discussion on adding religion to the Infobox for Mike Tyson. As this information appears to be reliably sourced, I attempted to add it, but noticed that the Infobox does not support this field.

Consequently, I am initiating a discussion here as to whether the Template sould be changed to include religion of the boxer. There are also a number of discussions at Template_talk:Infobox_person about the religion field in that template, which might prove informative.

All input, opinions and thoughts are welcomed. - Ryk72 'c.s.n.s.' 02:01, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Weight

I would like two clarifications on how this field should be used: 1. Are we to include all weight classes in which an active fighter has competed? 2. In what order should they be—heaviest to lightest or vice versa? Mac Dreamstate (talk) 02:54, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

Official website in infobox

Infoboxes for boxers don't appear to support official websites at present, yet martial artist info boxes do-- this seems like a massive oversight for legendary boxers like Muhammed Ali. This is something that should be rectified as a matter of urgency to stop fansites being the go-to place for news on Google. --HammyHavoc (talk) 18:30, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Addition of ethnicity field

Can ethnicity be added as a field for the Infobox boxer? Quackriot (talk) 01:45, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

I disagree vehemently at the addition of such a field. It is of no importance to an infobox; ethnicity and other such personal information should be only for the Early life or Personal life sections. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 01:48, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
Okay then. But I have noticed the field ethnicity is present on Infobox sportsperson, so hence why I was wondering. I don't see why it would be of less importance in a boxers article than in an article of any other sportsperson. Quackriot (talk)
Well, I just did a random search of some well-known sportspeople in their fields—Roger Federer (tennis), Lewis Hamilton (Formula 1), LeBron James (basketball), and Peter Prevc (ski jumping)—none make use of an ethnicity field. If it's present in Infobox sportsperson... then it shouldn't be. I'll see if I can get it zapped myself. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 02:08, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
Okay, I see your point. I wasn't suggesting ethnicity field would in every boxers case be relevant enough to be in the infobox - because that obviously isn't the case. Even Infobox person which includes a ethnicity field is seldomly used for the same reason - because it's rarely relevant enough to be filled in the infobox. For example, another random search of some known people in various fields: Barack Obama, Britney Spears, Brad Pitt, Martin Shkreli, Osama bin Laden... none of them have the ethnicity field filled in, even though the feild is an option there - because it's not relevant in their case either. I agree with you that in most cases, ethnicity is not relevant enough to be put in the infobox and rather belongs in the early life/personal sections. However, what I was thinking was that it could be added just in case it might be relevant for a certain person; for example if they are not only a boxer but also a known activist or spokesperson of their ethnicity. But anyways, if you don't think my suggestion is a good idea then I respect your opinion and withdraw my request. Greetings. Quackriot (talk) 02:47, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 17 June 2016

Please add the following lines to allow this template to be embedded in others:

| child = {{lc:{{{embed}}}}} | title = {{#ifeq:{{lc:{{{embed}}}}}|yes|'''Boxing career'''}}

Please also modify |above= as follows:

| above = {{#ifeq:{{lc:{{{embed}}}}}|yes||{{#if:{{{name|}}} |{{{name}}} |<includeonly>{{PAGENAME}}</includeonly>}}}} Nikkimaria (talk) 02:34, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Done, with modifications. See Template:Infobox boxer/testcases. The extra check for |embed= for |above= doesn't seem necessary given current module behavior. I noticed that you allow embed only when |embed=yes, when possibly, a use of {{yesno}} would be more flexible, allowing |embed=y, etc, but I've performed this to your spec. Thanks — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 20:30, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Fresh requests (some old, one new)

  • Like with {{Infobox martial artist}}, there should be a field for BoxRec IDs: | boxrec =
  • Another feature from {{Infobox martial artist}} should be KO losses: | KO loss =. Both that and KO wins should be in un-bolded text.
  • {{Infobox skier}} has an | updated = field, which would be very useful to know if a boxer's record is outdated. Format should be three-letter months.
  • For images with lots of whitespace, a border field should be added: | border = yes

Mac Dreamstate (talk) 22:49, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Knockout ratio (or percent)

It seems to be considered important by sources such as Boxrec, I figure that adding a field for it in the infobox would be minimal trouble, 2600:387:9:3:0:0:0:70 (talk) 19:55, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

Edit request: "weight" field

The display title for the weight= field is too ambiguous—"Rated at" could mean all sorts of things. It should simply read "Weight(s)", specifically to mean "weights at which they have notably competed". Mac Dreamstate (talk) 15:27, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
