Some ideas

edit
 • I don't know about the "wine descriptors" since that will vary considerably due to winemaking style. Maybe include something along the lines of "Notable wines" where we can include (like in the case of Chardonnay)-Champagne, Burgundy, varietal, etc. The reader could then link to those "wine styles" and read more about the description of the wine.
 • I would include in the beginning the classification like -Vitis Vinifera, Vitis labrusca, Hybrid grapes, etc.
 • It may also be worth noting known "viticultural hazards" like Phylloxera, oidium, late ripening, etc. Since this plays a large role in determining where these grapes can be planted and why some grapes (like Carmenere) are no longer successful in places like France but thrive in Chile. Wild ideas

edit

OK take this for what it is, wild ideas. Do we want things like.

 • Early/late ripening?
 • Suger level/brix/'normal' alcohol content?
 • red/(white/green)?
 • date of creation (ok might be impopssible for most grapes but for pinotage it would be good, not sure if there is many other examples ????)
 • related to/ crossed from?

Thanks for the input Stefan, I may include some of these in due course. scharks 03:47, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Questions

It would be the relevant picture of the article. The image shown on the template page is just a placeholder. Thanks, scharks 03:45, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

More ideas

edit

Echoing Stefan's comments, here's some possible tags for the genetics :

 • parent-1
 • parent-2 (presented as "parent-1 x parent-2)"
 • Breeder
 • Date bred ("date of origin"?)
 • Offspring (there's better words, but Offpsring just makes it more explicit in the tag, you can call it Crosses or something in the presentation)

Then there's a whole load of stuff relating to the vine, the hardcore ampelography data, like Berry colour, Cluster Shape, Fruit Set, Leaf Shape, Leaf colour, all that kind of stuff. Suspect brix etc is too environmentally dependent, but one or two tasting descriptors would be useful - probably best way is to do it as descriptor-1, descriptor-2, descriptor-3 and no more, to ensure people get the point that they're pointers rather than an essay in the infobox.

Perhaps do the regions as region-1 to 10 say, and then auto-link them?

Replace Also-called with synonym-1 to -4 and then have a synonym-more=yes/no flag that would automatically link to a Synonyms section by adding , (more) after the 4th synonym. Would encourage people to put the most significant synonyms in the Infobox, without cluttering it up with the name used by one family in the back end of Roussillon. Talking of synonyms, there's a great resource at - I commend it to the House. Having recently added the infobox to several grape articles, I definitely would like to have the parentage included! So many grapes have been DNA typed nowadays, that it's a shame not have this type of info very visible in the infobox.Tomas e (talk) 18:54, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
...although I think it would be better to have a single "parentage" parameter than parent1 & parent2, because you might wish to write things like "mutation of Pinot noir" or "A x B or possibly A x C" and not just "D x E". Tomas e (talk) 18:58, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Clarification on "noir"

edit

Since the infobox specifies acceptable parameter values for "color", I was wondering if "noir" is the same as a "blue-black" skin color. My sources for Thomcord don't mention the former, but instead use the latter. – VisionHolder « talk » 21:57, 27 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Colour

edit

With red-skinned grapes, the header has black text on a very dark red/maroon background, which may pose readability/accessibility problems. Could we lighten the background colour a little?

VIVC identifier

edit

I think we should add the Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC) identifier to the infobox, so we can link automatically to the VIVC database; this would enrich wiki semantic data too. In fact, much of the material for this infobox could be fetched from this source. For example, Corvinone would correspond to the URL http://www.vivc.de/index.php?r=passport/view&id=2864 using a field like:

vivc_id = 2864

Perhaps I will go play in the Template:Infobox_grape_variety/sandbox and see if I can get something working. Jon (talk) 05:49, 23 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Okay so that was surprisingly easy, what happens now? Is there a review process, or should I just go ahead and edit the template directly? Jon (talk)
I wonder if Wikidata includes VIVC IDs? I'd guess probably not, but perhaps they could be added. Plantdrew (talk) 02:06, 24 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Jonathanischoice and Plantdrew: |vivc_number= has been updated to draw from VIVC grape variety ID (P3904), thanks to RexxS @ Template talk:Taxonbar#VIVC Identifier for grape varieties.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  14:03, 8 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Tom.Reding: thanks so much for taking this on and getting this up and running; I would not have any idea where to start. Now that it is wired up to Wikidata, does that mean we can make it appear in the authority control template (for a grape variety)? Cheers, Jon (talk) 00:02, 11 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jonathanischoice: that is a question for Template talk:Taxonbar.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  15:04, 11 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
