Native name language

edit

{{editprotected}}

This template already has a native_name parameter. I think it should also have a native_name_lang parameter, to take the relevant ISO639 language code and should display the native name, where present, by replacing the current code:

<span class="nickname">{{{native_name}}}</span>}}

with:

<span class="nickname"{{#if:{{{native_name_lang|}}} lang="{{{native_name_lang}}}"}}>{{{native_name}}}</span>}} (see below)

Is everyone happy with that? If so, I'll request an {{editprotected}} Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 17:08, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

No objections; so I have done so. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 13:05, 3 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think your code is missing a vertical bar. --MZMcBride (talk) 18:08, 3 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Can you please create a template sandbox for an admin with the required change so that we can just copy-paste it from one into the other? I am not confident of editing the right line here. Stifle (talk) 10:05, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Done: Template:Infobox Settlement/sandbox. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 10:24, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

(←) Should this include xml:lang="{{{native_name_lang}}}" as well to match the span generated by {{lang}} (or alternatively use that template)? mattbr 20:05, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

The proposed change introduces the same mark-up, with our requiring the use of an additional template. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 10:27, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
The proposed change does not include the same mark-up. I have suggested the addition of xml:lang="{{{native_name_lang}}}", which is included in {{lang}} along with the lang attribute. The full text of the new code would therefore be <span class="nickname"{{#if:{{{native_name_lang|}}}| lang="{{{native_name_lang}}}" xml:lang="{{{native_name_lang}}}"}}>{{{native_name}}}</span>. mattbr 18:25, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I stand corrected, I have no problem with that, if others agree. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 18:33, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Done, but someone should confirm this is correct. —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 21:55, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Population census year

edit

Just a small quibble, but when you include a census year on population data in this template, it adds a comma to the year. (e.g. 2,008 instead of just 2008) See examples at Cusco, Iquique. Is there any way to prevent this from occurring? I can understand the comma being added for the population value itself, but the year shouldn't have a comma in it. Lurlock (talk) 19:35, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Use population_footnotes = 2007 instead of adding the year at the end of population_total. olderwiser 21:38, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
ITYM population_as_of = 2007. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 22:01, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks. (I created the Iquique infobox by copying the one at Cusco - which included the improper use of the template. Probably would've gotten it right if I'd picked any other city...) Lurlock (talk) 14:25, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Named for

edit

{{editprotected}}

After expanding Cass City, Michigan, I noticed that the named_for label is one of the few in its group that isn't wikilinked. Since Namesake would be entirely appropriate, please change the named_for label to "Named for"...Thanks. 68.167.254.198 (talk) 09:20, 1 October 2008 (UTC).Reply

  Done. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:39, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

USDA Hardiness zone

edit

Any objections to adding a field for hardiness zone, using the more-detailed a/b system and the most recently-published map (1990)? I would find this very useful, as would anyone else interested in gardening (hundreds of thousands of Wikipedians, I presume). How is this template edited - all I get is a "view source" tab-button? Nuberger13 (talk) 01:33, 2 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unless the code is somehow subtemplated, it can only take so many fields in its present state. Please use the "blank" fields for this type of info.
Because this template is used on more than 80,000 pages, it is fully protected and can only be edited by submitting requests on this talk and having an administrator do the editing. —MJCdetroit (yak) 12:55, 3 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Extinct towns

edit

Would it be suitable to use the Infobox Settlement template in articles for extinct communities? (Examples: Granville, Warrenton, etc.) It seems like the great majority of the template's fields would apply as well to a historical town as to a modern one, but I wanted to check before going ahead. Would entering a settlement_type of "extinct town" be appropriate? Thanks! Huwmanbeing  16:49, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't see any reason why not.--Kotniski (talk) 17:43, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Cool. As I think about it, perhaps it would make sense to add a flag somewhere in the template to differentiate between modern settlements and historical ones. To me this seems a fairly significant and intrinsic characteristic of any given settlement; plus, having a field for this datum would be more consistent than relying on users to customize the settlement_type with "extinct town", "defunct town", "ghost town", etc. Thoughts? Huwmanbeing  20:21, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
We could then look to merging-in applicable "former *" templates. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 20:44, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Interesting, I didn't know there were separate "former" templates. If adding the field would allow those to be merged in to the main template, that'd certainly be a plus. Huwmanbeing  01:12, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

It looks like the most appropriate place to add extinction information would probably be the "Politics" section, with the new field mirroring the existing "established" fields:

|extinct_title
|extinct_date

If the circumstances of the settlement's defunctitude (so to speak) call for a particular term, that presumably could be entered — e.g., "Destroyed", "Abandoned", etc.; otherwise, users can just enter "Extinct". If this occurred at a particular time, users could enter a date, year, etc. For instance, Granville, Indiana:

|extinct_title = Extinct
|extinct_date = c. 1878

Comments/suggestions? Also, since I don't trust my ability to properly edit the template, would someone be willing to make this change? Thanks! Huwmanbeing  21:06, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Better just use the existing fields
|established_title3 = Extinct
|established_date3 = c. 1878
The result would be the same, and we don't have to add to the already too long list of parameters. --Qyd (talk) 03:35, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ordinarily, I would agree with you; but in this case, the "end" date is a significant piece of metadata, and it may be advantageous to mark it up distinctly. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 17:47, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Qyd: True, we do have a lot of parameters already, and I wouldn't want to further inflate it unnecessarily. In this case, though, I do think that a datum indicating whether the subject exists is significant, since that's a fundamental characteristic of any community. Having a separate attribute for this would also allow the possibility of programming conditional variations for extinct/historical settlements -- not something anyone's suggested, but always a possibility.
Andy: Are you conversant enough with the template to make this change? Huwmanbeing  20:56, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Is there someone who'd be willing to make this addition to the template? Thanks! Huwmanbeing  00:02, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Coords not working right?

edit

Can someone cluebat me as to why the coords in the Schomberg, Ontario article don't work right? When you click though you end up at the "integer" locations, somewhere east of Toronto. However, if you look at the source, you'll see the coords are fully specified. Maury Markowitz (talk) 12:06, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tha latitude coordinates (minutes and seconds) are missing.--Kotniski (talk) 12:23, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

GENTILIC / DEMONYM

edit

Someone please add a parameter for a settlement's gentile title (i.e., a Washingtonian from Washington, a Liverpudlian for Liverpool, etc.). This issue has been brought up before, and I reduplicate the four separate discussions here:

Demonym
Would it be possible to add a place for the demonym of a city—the name given to its inhabitants? Such names don't seem to be used often in English-speaking countries (at least, not in America), but demonyms are quite common in Spanish, and probably similar languages as well, so it would be nice if we could add them to the infobox.Salmar 20:25, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Gentilic
Can we add a field for the city's gentilic? This wouldn't be too hard and would be useful. I noticed several other more specific infoboxes for cities and towns have this.
--Alekjds 01:50, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I think that's what the "nickname" field is for. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 16:09, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
It's a little different. Gentilic, or demonym, is what the residents of the city are called, not a nickname for the city itself. Like "New Yorker" for New York City. --MattWright (talk) 22:43, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Oops - you're right. I misunderstood a Template_talk:Infobox_City/Archive_2#Misunderstanding_of_.22nickname.22_field previous post on this very topic. My bad :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 02:40, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Demonym
How about adding a row for demonyms? I noticed that the country infobox has this, but not settlements. Carson 23:31, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
You can use one of the blank fields as was done in Tingwick, Quebec. —MJCdetroit 04:11, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Would probably look even better in the population_blank1/title field (in the Population section). --Qyd 05:16, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Already following your lead. :) Carson 06:02, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Demonym - part 1
There was some previous discussion about adding a demonym parameter. The documentation lists population_demonym but then under usage it states in red: "Not currently available". Is anyone working on this? __meco (talk) 08:45, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
I support this proposal. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 09:48, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I imagine that the great majority of settlements (particularly smaller ones) don't have any particular, documented demonyms; however, for those that do I think it'd be good to have in the infobox. I support its inclusion. Huwmanbeing  19:33, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I support this proposal as well. This is an informative add-on to the info box. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 05:12, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
