Migrating to Wikisource: Issues to Address

edit

I've started changing the sandbox version of the LDS template to point to Wikisource (it is very very pre-alpha at the moment though), and I think I have a decent handle on how to proceed, but there are a bunch of decision points to make that I'm hoping to get feedback on—or at least to think through out loud. Here are the main issues I'm seeing, and what I'm planning to do with them for now:

  • Issue: Nonstandard Wikisource Formatting. Between the KJV, BoM, D&C, and PoGP, Wikisource is not consistent in how it handles the id names for chapters within the html, which is what you need to link to in order to jump directly to a specific chapter or verse: in the KVJ you can use either #Chapter_3 or just #3 to jump to chapter 3 of a book; in the BoM you can only use #Chapter_3; in the D&C there aren't any chapters because each Section is treated like a book is in the Bible of BoM, and in the PoGP the only option is #1—but that doesn't even work because those id names are overridden by identically named id's that link to proofreading pages! (See specific examples on my user page.) Names of id's to link to specific verses are at least all the same for all of the standard works (e.g., #3:6) except again in the D&C since each section is its own book the verses are named #1, #2, etc. If we don't change the documents on Wikisource at all, the template will need a bunch of logic to structure its links right depending on which standard work is being cited. That of course isn't the end of the world, but would make the template much more confusing to the next person to look at it and try to maintain/improve it. If we do want to try to change the formatting of the html on Wikisource, though, we would definitely need to consult the people who are maintaining the documents there and/or their policies to make sure I'm not breaking anything.
    • Tentative plan: I'm going to punt this one for a bit and just work on getting the KJV and BoM links to work, where the structure is all the same. I don't think there's anything we can do about the D&C so that will probably always have to be a special case. I will also look into updating the PoGP chapter id names to match the formatting of the KJV and BoM (i.e., so it would be #Chapter_1).
  • Issue: Official Declaration 2 is Under Copyright. As noted on the D&C page on Wikisource, Official Declaration 2 is still under copyright so it can't be hosted on Wikisource.
    • Tentative plan: Just cite to the LDS Church's website for that one regardless of whether the (hypothetical) LDS flag in the template is set.

Any thoughts? Tagging Epachamo since he's the only one I've directly interacted on this yet :) ― biggins (talk) 17:31, 24 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
