Closed stations

edit

@Useddenim: Why do you object to clarifying which stations are closed? While most elements of RDTs are fairly intuitive even to readers not very familiar with the subject matter, it is not necessarily obvious that the lighter dot indicates a closed station. That's particularly true at the small scale of the HST dots: with less-than-ideal contrast such as a screen viewed outdoors, the difference in shading is difficult to notice. Additionally, not all the closed stations have articles yet, so it's not always possible for the reader to click on the article to see that it's closed. Given all that, I think it's a net benefit to the reader with minimal downside. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:09, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

For the same reason that WP:OVERCAT exists, although you raise a valid point for the cases where a linked page doesn't exists. This issue was debated at (I think) WP:UKRAIL quite a number of years ago and the consensus was "less is more", i.e. only add additional notation to stations where it is needed (usually when there is more than one of the same name due to either relocation or competing companies, but also for missing pages). I agree that the diagram is confusing and borderline ambiguous for most readers without labels for closed stations. It's also consistent with templates for other US rail lines, that either list the year a station closed or omit closed stations entirely. QuincyMorgan (talk) 17:23, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
