Template talk:Message
Horrible. Would anyone mind if I changed the colour of this banner slightly? Every time I encounter it, I momentarily get the impression someone has edited my Talk page. Heart palpatation ensues. I would greatly prefer a different colour. Thanks.

Isn't that just as nice? Better?-- Ec5618 02:53, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
It's been turned to a blue now, which I guess is okay. I agree, when it was the identical color of the orange "You have new messages box" it was slightly confusing. --Cyde Weys votetalk 22:15, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
- I greatly prefer the green, actually. -- Ec5618 21:21, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- I prefer the blue myself. But FWIW, I've added optional parameters that allow you to specify any colors you like for the background, border and text (all are optional, and default to the blue theme). Here's how it'd be called for the green colors you have above–

editThis edit that I just made should make the template work for users (and pages) who have spaces in their names. Apologies for marking the edit minor and the lack of edit summary. I was trying to test this out in my sandbox before changing the actual template; I ended up making the changes in the wrong tab, and (thinking I was editing my sandbox) marked the edit minor and left out an edit summary. FWIW, it looks like the change should work. — Jeff | (talk) | 09:39, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
Broke it?
editEr, how did it break it? (I even tested it in IE) —Locke Cole • t • c 04:46, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
When you turn it into using the "usermessage" class (or whatever) it will display the very broken functionality of having its text warp into "You have new messages". It's very definitely broken ... try it in Firefox and see. --Cyde Weys 16:07, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- I did... in Firefox 1.5 (which I use regularly). It still said "Please leave a new message" (with the correct link). —Locke Cole • t • c 18:42, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- Same for me. "Please leave a new message". -- Ec5618 18:44, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
Here's what it looks like (broken) for me. I am using the latest version of Firefox. I get a similar bug in IE, except it just displays "You have (changes)". Seems to me like this could be a plugin/JavaScript error ... but then again, enough users are using Popups or AfD helper or whatever that this template shouldn't be broken for them when a reasonable alternative exists. Cyde Weys 23:06, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- Wow. I have this feeling that if you signed out it'd look normal (well, especially if you did a refresh). Thanks for helping clear up why it breaks though, it'll at least keep me from using that method anywhere else. =) —Locke Cole • t • c 21:12, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- So, was the text somehow changed in the mockup-"You have a message", or did you have an actual message which was displayed strangely? -- Ec5618 21:17, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- I don't understand your question? Anyway, my final guess as to this bug is that one of the navigation addon scripts is checking for "You have new message" boxes by the usermessage class, and when it detects that, it changes the text, changing the functionality of (diff) to (changes) for multiple new messages. So, basically, the usermessage class shouldn't be used for anything else. --Cyde Weys 02:39, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
- Right. So the template was somehow changed (the mockup I mentioned). How odd. I would have thought it more likely that an actual new message and the template someone interacted, to odd effect. How odd. -- Ec5618 02:42, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Modified again
editThis time, instead of using the CSS class directly, I just copied the style info into a DIV tag. Let me know if there's any troubles. =) —Locke Cole • t • c 03:07, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
idea
editPlease leave a new message. |
There is an idea. A centered box, it looks neater too. [wossi] 22:44, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- There actually isn't an option to make "Please leave a new message." to the center unless you do that.. --staka (T ・C) 04:09, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- I've coded this using a parameter "text-align" instead of the hardcoded <center>. I left center as the default, but I'm not sure that is what people want. It can easily be changed tho. ~ PaulT+/C 15:34, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- The box was fine before. (Unless more people want it centered) RkOrToN 17:40, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

- I added the text-align option back, but set "left" as default. Gh5046 (talk) 18:19, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
Added if statement for padding
editI forgot to include an edit summary, but I added an if statement to allow the padding to be set manually. My revision is here. Gh5046 (talk) 21:00, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Modification of the template message
editI was bold and added this message to the template: "and always remember to sign it using four tildes (~~~~)". I think it's a very good idea, most newcomers don't sign their comments, and probably don't even see the sign on top of the "new message" page. I think it doesn't hurt to remind them of that even before they try to leave a message. I like it, and I hope other people like it too. –w2bh talk•contribs 07:05, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
- That is already stated at the top of the page when editing a talk page. Chances are if a person is going to ignore it there, they'll ignore it next to the link. Gh5046 (talk) 09:25, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Template Broken, malformed URL + typo
editI noticed today that this template does not work (at least for me). The URL it takes you to when clicking the link is : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:MiloKral%7Caction=edit§ion=new}} Where obviously my username would be replaced with the user using it. Anyway, it seems like a quick fix, the | right after the username needs to be changed to ?, and the 2 rogue }} brackets at the end need to be removed. Then it works as intended (as far as I can tell). I'm new here so I don't know how to apply this fix myself, someone else please do so --MiloKral (talk) 17:07, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- Looks like King of Hearts recent change fixed my issue, thanks! --MiloKral (talk) 17:23, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Center
edit@Frietjes and SS49: This is no longer centered by default as it should be, e.g.:
This user is busy in real life and may not respond swiftly to queries. |
— Godsy (TALKCONT) 08:05, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
- User:Godsy, {{busy}} uses {{tmbox}} not {{message}}. do you have another example using {{message}}? Frietjes (talk) 17:50, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Frietjes: {{message}} is invoked within the "text" parameter of {{tmbox}} in the {{busy}} template. The September 16, 2020 changes to this template are the only thing I can discern that may have caused it to no longer display as centered. Perhaps I am missing or misunderstanding something though. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 23:16, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- User:Godsy, as far as I know, the default for boxes like the "busy" box has always been to center when there is no left image, and left align when there is a left image. as far as this template is concerned, checking this revision the text looks centered to me, and is currently centered as well. as I am sure you know, {{busy}} doesn't use {{message}} but both do use Module:Message box.
