New York City Flag pic VS Shea Stadium pic

edit

I want a new Consensus of editers on how to make this template more fair to all New York sports fans. What is More important the flag on New York City in which some venues are not even located in or Shea Stadium the home of over 40 Years of New York Baseball and 19 Years of NFL Football? I can live with a picture Yankee Stadium as long as picture of Shea Stadium is next to it. Dan aka DLA75 02:23 30 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I say leave the template as it is. Silent Wind of Doom's reasons for the pictures shown (which can be found in the "Discussion of pics" section) are ones that I agree with. Your argument that the Template promotes New York baseball as only the Yankees is wrong, if the Mets weren't listed at all then that would be a problem, but they are listed, and in the First line of the body before the Yankees (alphabetical order). Secondly, the picture of Shea that you are asking to be added isn't a good picture. The stadium is off-center and there is dead space (which could be fixed with a crop, but I'm not good at editing pic's) which is just magnified by the small image size. Shea should stay off. --Michael Greiner 19:26, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am sure we can find a better picture of Shea to be put up. I could even take a new one on my digital camra next week and see if I can post it.Dan aka DLA75 22:37 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Yankee Statdium pic

edit

The Yankee Stadium picture is not a good fit for this template...we gotta find something else Benje309 21:30, 27 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • It has to be something representative of the entire area, not just New York City. I think Yankee Stadium is the most well known of the stadiums, maybe except for Madison Square Garden. And make sure you can get past the Mets fan in you. Michael Greiner 00:08, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Me being a Mets fan is not the point here. If I wanted shea stadium on the template, I would have put it on there originally. I think it needs to be a more general picture. Benje309 00:24, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • I'm a life-long Mets fan and I was the one who replaced the New York City flag with the picture of Yankee Stadium. The Yankee Stadium picture is iconic and recognizable even at a small size, while the Shea picture is almost indistinguishable. I would agree that a picture of the interior of Madison Square Garden might do the job, and even a picture of Ebbets Field might fly. But Shea has to go, both here as an image, and in Flushing as a stadium. Let's Go Mets, just not here. Alansohn 18:57, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
      • Since there are so many teams in NYC, we will not be able to agree on a sports-related picture to best represent the area. I think there should be an iconic non-sports picture like of the Empire State Building, or perhaps No picture at all. The template doesn't need a picture. Milchama 19:33, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
      • I agree that no picture is needed, but at least that picture of Shea has got to go. To the New York area outsider that picture might not be obvious to what it is (end of grandstand on first base line). Michael Greiner 22:57, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have put up a picture of Shea Stadium do not take it down. Though Yankees fans think every thing is about them it is not. It is not all about the yankees and Yankees stadium. The Beatles preformed at Shea stadium not at Yankee Stadium. It is not you town yankees fan you share it with us. Lets go Mets.— Preceding unsigned comment added by DLA75 (talkcontribs)

  • I don't think you understand, there is consensus for the four pics that that are shown, per wikipedia policy. Also, have you looked at the template with the shea pic. The header is totally meesed up, taking up nearly 6 lines of text. I am removing the picture of shea per discussion above and below. If something changes then we will see but most want the 4. BTW, the Beatles concert was a non-sporting event and is irrelevant here. Michael Greiner 19:11, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

How did you get your consensus? How do we get a new consensus? Take Down the NYC Flag. Last time I checked Giant Sdadium is in East Rutherford, New Jersey not New York City anyway. I am ecouraging Mets. You should Find a way to Keep Shea up. If not take Yankee Stadium down too. This is unfair and disrespectfull to Mets fans. I am encouraging mets fans to post here so we have a new consensus.— Preceding unsigned comment added by DLA75 (talkcontribs)

Giants Stadium is in East Rutherford, but is the home of the New York Giants, New York Jets, and Red Bull New York. Also notice how the template's title is "Sports teams based in and around New York City". It's not unfair, a majority of editors decided not to have Shea up, and that is how Wikipedia works. Oh, and getting people just to post here would be a violation of Wikipedia:Canvassing. Michael Greiner 19:24, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I Vote for New York Flag to be taken down a relaced with Shea Stadium or Yankee Stadium must coume down too. The Chicago Template has no pictures I think that is the not bad idea eather. I do like the idea of looing up the Mets and the New York template implies that New York Baseball is sumed up by Yankee Stadium. In 2009 will you premit Citi Field to be up or are we going to be stuck with the New Yankee Stadium? Dan

Since Old Yankee Stadium is now out of use so i took the picture of it down. We can decide latter if we want to put up New Yankee Stadium or Citi Fied to replace it, though I think i am proably in the minority in wanting a picture of Citi Field. The concessus on this board will proably lean towards a picture of New Yankee Stadium.

New Layout

edit

I used {{Navigation}} to at least make this box hideable. Over on New Jersey Devils, it was the only one that wasn't. I didn't know how/if there was a way to keep the two column table formatting with the template, so I took a stab at redoing the layout. Lend a hand if you can improve this whopper. :) Thx. — MrDolomite • Talk 16:39, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Discussion of pics

edit
  • No way, this template is big enough as it is, pics will make it huge. And then there is the old "which pics are legit to use in a template on multiple articles copyright vio paranoia" discussion :) — MrDolomite • Talk 14:58, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Right, it's too big. It's also too plain and boring. If you're gonna take up that much space on these pages, make it look a little better. Now, the three pictures that I put in all have no mention of Wikipedia use restrictions. They are not copyrighted and under free use, restricting them from use in template, so there seems to be no problem there. Now, the New York flag at least needs to be included. As for the other pictures, the earlier arguement involved which picture to include, but that when there was only one picture. I put in three, and they are the three that best represent the subject. First of all, the venues represent the four biggest sports in the country. Second of all, they are the most prominent three of the venues in the city, and home to the cities four biggest franchises, the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers, the New York Giants, and the New York Yankees, not to mention the New York Jets and Red Bull New York who also inhabit the Meadowlands. I'd like to include Shea, or the Continental Airlines Arena, but there's only enough room for three. These pictures take up very little more space to the template. They are small, but still able to be read. I see absolutely no reason why this cannot be done. As for the other changes, I don't know if it was just all reverted by someone who doesn't look close enough at what he's doing, or if he didn't agree with it, but I still stand by them. We cannot put the WNBA a line below the NBA. While the NBA may be more prominent, the two are equal organizations, and should be on the same line. It's pretty much offensive. Also, I think the Minor League should be put on the same line with the majors, because the two are related, and to have such a small line above such a big line really doesn't look right aesthetically. Silent Wind of Doom 18:20, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Hey...I was the guy who made the revert. I honestly did not see that you changed the NBA-WNBA thing...my bad...its a good edit. As for the pictures, if you look to the "Yankee Stadium Pic" section of this talk page, you will see that I made a comment about wanting a picture. However, we did come to the conclusion on the talk page here that pictures (at least at that time) were not good for this template. After reading your comments above, I played around with the pictures that you put on the template and made them smaller. I didn't save it because the pictures were just too small to be of any use in this template. I put each picture to size 20px. The template is big as it is. Unless there is a way to put the picture(s) in without increasing the size for the template...tell us...we are open to ideas. Benje309 20:53, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • I took the NFL and cut it to one line. It didn't need to be two anyway. I also brought the Minor Leagues up a line so it looked better than two teams above a line of teams that took up the whole template. I took away one line, and the pictures add two, so I think one line is sufficient sacrifice for the template looking much better. I wish I had enough proficiency with Wikipedia to make the title two or three lines and leave the pictures on the same line on either side of it. If we did that, we could fit Shea and the Continental Airlines Arena. Silent Wind of Doom 22:54, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Am I the only person who is having the baseball section mostly covered up by the pictures? This is happening to me in both IE 7 and Firefox 2.0.0.2. Also, I don't think the CIFL belongs on the same line as the NFL, but that may just be me. Michael Greiner 23:07, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yep, the top of the template and the intro box are clobbered by the pics in Firefox 1.5.0.10. Maybe that nav template just cannot deal with images in the header? — MrDolomite • Talk 10:55, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Made color much closer.Michael Greiner 22:52, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • It's Fixed!!! I changed the template type to one with an expandable header (Navbox generic with image and styles) and it worked. The pictures do not block anything or overlap the bottom edge of the box when collapsed. I also think that this box style is more organized than the previous box, with everything aligned instead of being centered. I also added one minor thing, a link to the Sports in New York article. Michael Greiner 16:25, 10 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Great job, it looks similar to the original template type...it is much "cleaner" than what was there and the pictures are working. Still, lets go mets! Benje309 04:18, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Added new Team

edit

I added the Harlem Globetrotters to the basketball section and then added this template to their page. I know they don't compete in a traditional professional league, but they're pretty famous and they're more professional than most of the minor league teams in this template (Westchester Phantoms, cough, cough... who play in a high school gym)69.120.7.167 (talk) 20:24, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

For some reason someone took it out without an explanation why. I added it back in. 161.185.151.150 (talk) 16:16, 31 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
The Globetrotters are based in Phoenix according to this. --Michael Greiner 06:33, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Connecticut

edit

I added the Bridgeport minor league teams, the Fairfield colleges, and the Danbury Mad Hatters because Connecticut is a VERY important part of the NY Metro area and they deserve some recognition —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.86.122.109 (talk) 14:21, 11 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Defunct and Former Teams

edit

What about a section of defunct teams from the area (New York Black Yankees of the Negro League, Staten Island Stapes of the NFL) and former teams (Brooklyn Dodgers)? I think it would be a good part of history. Arnabdas (talk) 20:43, 22 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
