Purpose

Provides a link based on an NYSE stock symbol, and automatically categorizes the page under Category:Companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

How to use this template

Should template:nyse be used on NASDAQ-listed stocks?

Short version?

Is there a "short version" of Template:Nyse, like Template:Ndaq for NASDAQ links instead of Template:Nasdaq? tregoweth 02:20, August 21, 2005 (UTC)

As per the precedent of Template:Nasdaq & Template:Ndaq, as well as Template:Tsx and Template:Tsx2, I have created Template:Nyse2 for use in instances when auto-categorization to Category:Companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange is not desirable. Kurieeto 23:52, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Parentheses

I suggest that we do not include parentheses here, in order to better combine with similar templates. For example: (NYSE: SNE, TYO: 6758) Shawnc 15:35, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Reason for bold?

If the reason is uniformity, then all the other ticker symbol templates should be changed so as not to be bold either. This makes the ticker symbol stand out inappropriately from the rest of the text. It is often a parenthetical addition and is by no means as as important as the leading line title, or defining a term in an article. If an editor wants it to be bold in one of the rare cases where it would be appropriate in an article, then that boldness can be formatted without including it in the template itself. -- Centrx 18:19, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Totally for uniformity, I'm not particularly fussed whether they're bold or not, I just noticed on the HSBC article as 4 of the 5 listings have bold in their templates. All I would say is that they all should be the same either way. Ian3055 18:41, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm leaning towards unbolding them for the reasons given by Centrx. The most important thing is uniformity, of course. You could probably use something like Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser to do this, but you may need a little regex knowledge. Rhobite 22:49, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Requested change

Nyse → NYSE

The template was created in 2004; that may have been before the software could handle multiple uppercase letters in titles. You'll see a lot of articles about "John smith" from that era, too. WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:35, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Use this URL instead

The URL currently in use by this template assumes that the stock symbol entered is correct. We should use NYSE's own quote-search engine instead, so in the worst case when the stock symbol doesn't exist or there are multiple possibilities, NYSE will return the alternatives instead of returning you to the wrong stock or a non-existent page.

So, replace the following:

http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/{{lc: {{{1}}} }}.html

With the following:

http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/quickquote.html?ticker={{lc: {{{1}}} }}

Multiple stocks on the same exchange

{{editprotected}} Many companies like Berkshire Hathaway, have different classes of stock on the same exchange. Instead of listing the exchange twice, can we modify the template to accept two or three symbols?

e.g. ({{nyse|BRK.A|BRK.B}} to output (NYSE: BRK.A, BRK.B). Here is the code:

Current URL Can't handle periods

Examples:

• Royal Dutch Shell: NYSE: RDS.A vs NYSE: RDSA
• Berkshire Hathaway: NYSE: BRK.B vs NYSE: BRKB

To me there are two possible solutions

a) Use this URL instead as it can handle it. e.g. [1]

http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/quickquote.html?ticker={{lc: {{{1}}} }}

b) Strip the periods ourselves:

[http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/lcddata.html?ticker={{lc: {{Replace|{{{1}}}|.|}} }}

The downfall to A is it adds a redirect for the user. The downfall to B is that it is more processing on the Wikipedia server side. I recommend B as the impact should be small. --Svgalbertian (talk) 15:06, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Stopped work

Can this template be used for indices?

If I want to link to e.g. the NYSE Composite index, this template will not work: NYSE: NYA (correct link). Is there a way to use this template anyway? Or do I need to manually use the URL? Lonaowna (talk) 14:40, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

Multiple Symbols, like the TSX's template
