Template talk:New user bar

Edit request from Charann2000, 11 June 2011

edit

{{edit protected|answered=yes}} I would like to insert a photo image of myself on my User Page which is already under protection. I created an uploaded image of myself of Wikimedia, and got several codes and now would like to attach a photo.....please let me know if I can still do this! Also, spell check ran a check and did not catch a spelling error in the word, "predominantly" in my narrative portion of my user page and I would also like to correct that as well.

{{edit protected}} This template is adding an inappropriate "edit" link on the new user pages. The "About me" section heading has an "[Edit]" link that is sending new users to Template:New user bar. I don't know how to fix this. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:25, 12 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I think that adding __NOEDITSECTION__ to the template would do as a quick fix, at least until the new editors add their own sub-sections and wonder why there are no "edit section" links. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:59, 12 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Using <h2> instead of == should remove it. See [1]. User<Svick>.Talk(); 12:02, 12 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Category

edit

To get the correct category (e.g. Category:New Wikipedians 2011-06), you are going to have to substitute this template. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:24, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

"add an image of yourself" is out of scope for Commons

edit

Hi, could the section encouraging new users to upload a photo of themselves be removed? The consensus on Commons defined by Commons:OOS is that such photographs are not realistically of educational purpose. We should not be encouraging new users to upload photos as their first experience of using Commons that are immediately subject to deletion. Thanks (talk) 09:50, 8 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I understand you. It's a valid point. The reason that the add an image of yourself-part exists on this template is that we know that people are less likely to be reverted on Wikipedia if they have an image on their user page. And if those images are deleted, there are a whole lot of user pics that could be deleted too, which means that the consensus on Commons may need to be looked over. Do you have any solution that can bring these two sides together, that would be great. And of course, we can go on testing what works best to get newcomers to start edit Wikipedia.//Hannibal (talk) 23:27, 9 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
How do you know that people with their photos are less likely to be reverted? User<Svick>.Talk(); 23:37, 9 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I suggest that if you want to bring "two sides together" (I'm not sure there are "sides" here), then a request at Commons Village pump is a good idea. If you intend to get the scope of Commons changed, that is a big change and should be discussed before attempting to encourage new users to go against existing consensus.
To reiterate my point, if my first experience of Wikimedia Commons were to follow this introductory template to load my own photograph and it gets speedy deleted with warnings left on my talk page, I'd be pretty put off by the experience and may even feel mislead by the apparently friendly guidance this template offers. Commented-out text

edit

The commented-out explanatory text within the angle brackets needs to mention that text placed within the angle brackets will not be visible on the finished page.

You'd be surprised by how many people have posted userpage content within those brackets.

I'd fix it myself, but I'm too busy to figure out which subtemplate is involved. DS (talk) 14:40, 3 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please remove or improve the cat

edit

Every (substituted) user page created in October with this template has Category:New Wikipedians 2011-09. Please (preferably) remove the cat from the template, or make sure that it is uptodate every month. Note that unsubtituted uses of the template will get added to a new month cat every month, and removed from the previous one. Considering that the standard behaviour for this is not to substitute it, simply removing the cat is the best. Fram (talk) 13:30, 31 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Having checked this, we have one from June, none from July, no cat for August, 25,000 for September, and no category for October (or November) in Category:New Wikipedians. Not really very useful... Fram (talk) 13:32, 31 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion – The category name should be end with "Month Year" (e.g. Category:New Wikipedians from November 2011) as is similarly done with Category:Wikipedia maintenance categories sorted by month (e.g. Category: Articles needing additional references from November 2011, Category:Userspace drafts from November 2011, and the like). —Senator2029 | talk 03:15, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please remove [[Category:New Wikipedians 2011-09]]. Every new user using this template is still getting placed into this category. There are 50,979 pages in the category (and counting), many of whom are no longer new users anyway. This category is misleading and really not useful. Thanks. – Wdchk (talk) 01:59, 27 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Done, plainly incorrect. Thanks. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 11:17, 27 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

That's patent nonsense and sure to wrongfoot people who turn their user page into something that violates wp:userpage.12:22, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
