Change the link?
editThe "Please refrain from creating nonsense articles" sentence is currently linked to Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not for things made up in school one day, which I feel doesn't encompass correctly all the different types of nonsense pages that are added. Sometimes people put articles with randomn characters or diatribes of incoherent ramblings which would not necessarily be considered as "something thought up one day". I propose that the link be changed to Wikipedia:Patent nonsense which I feel would cover all cases. --GringoInChile 14:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- I concur. I also have edited it to create a level 2 headline. Urania3 23:27, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Add an image?
editShould the image Stop hand.svg be added to the template? If added, the template would appear like this:
Welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome your help to create new content, but your recent additions (such as [[:{{{1}}}]]) are considered nonsense. Please refrain from creating nonsense articles. If you want to test things out, edit the sandbox instead. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.
Reword proposal
editI'm going to make a bold proposal here: I think this template should be totally reworded.
The current wording is appropriate for warning users who are actually writing patent nonsense articles, but unfortunately, CSD G1 is now being applied far too inaccurately by newpage patrollers. No matter how clear WP:NONSENSE and WP:CSD make it, nonsense tags continue to be added to unclear cruft articles, badly formatted material, material not in english, material not in clear english, and other such good faith edits. When these articles' authors are given this template, it must seem unnecessarily patronising to them (can you imagine arriving at the project and being told you were writing "nonsense" when your edits were serious and in good faith?) My proposed rewording is (sort of adapted from the nn-warn):
A tag has been placed on [[:{{{1}}}]], requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself.
If the page you created was a test edit, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.
I know it's a silly idea to reword a template or change something just because other people are doing stuff they shouldn't be doing, but it is happening. I also understand that the proposed wording could still seem somewhat insulting to a good faith editor, but it does at least give them instructions on how to act if the tag has been placed in error, and rather than telling them the page was nonsense, it suggests that it appears to be nonsense.
Let me know your thoughts, - Zeibura S. Kathau (Info | Talk) 22:47, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
- I like that much better because it avoids the word nonsense and admits that the deletion can be contested. NickelShoe (Talk) 13:41, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
- Hm, well I see no objections, a third opinion would have been valuable, but I've made the change anyway. At least if people didn't notice the proposal, they'll notice the change on the template. - Zeibura Talk 03:52, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
- I have mixed feelings. I think your rationale has a lot of merit and have seen a lot of bad tagging expecially of late, but, then again, I want the old template back to use! (for real nonsense of course). Time to userfy a copy;-)--Fuhghettaboutit 00:45, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Template Challenges
editthe user warning one on db-bio and db-nonsense gives doesn't put the page name into the warning but rather a bit of markup language. See below
- I believe that happens if you leave out the page name parameter. Rd232 talk 17:50, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Rewording?
edit- I think this template should be reworded because all nonsense pages don't necessarily contain incoherent text; for example, they could be "joke" articles. THE AMERICAN METROSEXUAL 17:38, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
- That's not what the template is for - see WP:CSD G1. Rd232 talk 17:48, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
- But I've seen many a joke article get speedily deleted under this rationale. THE AMERICAN METROSEXUAL 07:23, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
- Sure - probably because people incorrectly tag as G1, when it should more properly be G3. Rd232 talk 08:04, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
