Distinction

edit

Should there be some sort of difference in color or font to differentiate between pre-season and post-season hurricanes? --Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 22:15, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

The idea was good but the colors are way too bright and not well suited for an encyclopedia. If you can get a better set of colors to accurately portray the specifics, feel free to show them here first so others can give their opinion. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 15:14, 7 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
How about this?

Less garish, I hope? And you won't be able to confuse the purple with the color of blue links that you've already clicked on (slightly different shade of purple). Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 18:43, 8 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

IDK, the yellow is slightly hard to read. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:46, 8 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
How about this?

Is it better? I replaced the orange with brown. Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 19:40, 8 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

I really like that. Great job. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:47, 8 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ditto, except I think it could use a little more contrast.

With the purple-and-brown version, it was hard to distinguish between the two. I hope this one fixes everything! Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 20:36, 8 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Do we really need to distinguish between pre and post season when doing so using colours breaches the MOS.Jason Rees (talk) 03:47, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes we do. Look above you. Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 04:06, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
No i dont think we do since it breaches WP:Access and thus the MOS per our FLC Directors comments on the current GT nomination. Also please remember that Consensus can change and WP:BoldJason Rees (talk) 04:10, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Where is your evidence that consensus has changed? Who is backing you up? Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 04:29, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Where is the consensus that the MOS should be breached by this template with the inclusion of Colours? The consensus above doesn't give you the right to breach the MOS and nor is it a common sense exception IMO. Especially when the FLC Director is moaning about the colours breaching the MOS at this GT.Jason Rees (talk) 04:36, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

This, then? Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 05:13, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

That looks better, IMO. Maybe not so many groups, so it's not as long? --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 05:19, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
BTW, since when is The Rambling Man "the FLC Director"? That is not a title allowable on Wikipedia. Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 05:22, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
WP:FLC - he is the director, and has been for a few years. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 05:24, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 05:37, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Jason, I wasn't "moaning" about it, I was just stating the facts. The template does not comply with WP:ACCESS. For those who are colour blind or have difficulty in distinguishing between certain colours, this template which uses just colour to differentiate between types of hurricanes is less accessible. Whoop Whoop, where does it say "FLC Director" is not "a title allowable on Wikipedia"? Have you read the WP:FLC instructions? There is also a FAC Director by the way. Would the italics proposed in the final template above work TRM? my feeling is that it still wouldn't pass WP:Access.Jason Rees (talk) 17:20, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
The italics is certainly a better solution than the colours-only approach. It would certainly cover the colour-blind issue, but by all accounts screen readers tend to ignore italics, bold etc so a blind reader wouldn't get the template. The way we deal with it in featured lists is to accompany the colour with a symbol, that way the symbol will be distinguishable to the colour-blind and read out by screen readers, but the colour will be obvious to those without accessibility issues.
