Parliamentary precinct
editWhat definition of Parliamentary Precinct is being used here? Many of the buildings in this section of the template are far removed from the Parliamentary Precinct, as I would imagine it is generally understood, but I did not want to remove anything in case there is some obscure official definition for the precint (that, given the contents of this section, covers downtown Hull and most of Ottawa). As per WP:V and WP:OR, could we please substantiate that all the buildings in this section are, in fact, in considered to be in a Parliamentary Precinct?--Skeezix1000 (talk) 14:57, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- For example, see this definition used by Public Works and Government Services. I'm not suggesting that we be quite that strict (for example, I find it hard to imagine discussing a Parliamentary Precinct without the Langevin Block, and am sure we could find support for its inclusion). However, I'm not sure that the Precinct, absent some reliable source indicating otherwise, extends all the way to Tunney's Pasture or Heron Road. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 19:30, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- Then there is also this mapping used by the National Capital Commission, which includes in the Precinct everything along Wellington (on both sides), from the Canal in the east to the Ottawa River Parkway in the west. Keep in mind this map was prepared for land use planning purposes, rather than on any official or funational basis, and isn't necessarily authoritative in its depiction of the precinct. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 19:35, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- The term "parliamentary precinct" seems to have been carried over from the article Parliament Hill, where I used it in the third paragraph of the "Grounds" section. I employed the words because the buildings beyond Parliament Hill are occupied by departments parliamentary in nature, and thus seem to fall within a parliamentary jurisdiction - or, precinct. So, I suppose I did engage in a bit of OR, though I didn't intend it to cause any problems. Is there another phrase that could be used to describe the same thing? --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 16:23, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
- There is nothing wrong with the term itself. Given the sources I located above, it seems absolutely correct, and it is a good addition to the template. Sorry for any confusion. My concern is actually with the contents of the section -- many of the buildings listed are far removed from Parliament Hill and have little relation to the activities of Parliament (except insofar as they are federal buildings, and all federal government departments technically serve Parliament). This is a template for Parliament Hill, not Parliament. Any definition/scope we use should really be backed up with a source -- since PWGS is responsible for Parliament Hill, I would tend to defer to its definition ("all Crown-owned buildings occupied by the House of Commons, the Senate and the Library of Parliament") of what it considers the Parliamentary Precinct to be (although I suspect we could also find support for the inclusion of the Langevin Block, given that it contains the PMO/PCO). --Skeezix1000 (talk) 20:06, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

The original intent for this template Template:Parliament_Hill&oldid=156549953 appears to have been as a navbox for things on Parliament Hill and it appears to me that it is still only used on articles that are located on the grounds Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Parliament Hill. I think a more narrow scope is entirely proper and useful. DoubleBlue (talk) 01:48, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- Ok. Trimmed in the manner described above. Skeezix1000 (talk) 20:48, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
