It would be very nice that the given names could be included to show the short form of a name. For example {{Portuguese name|Ronaldo|de Assis|Moreira}} would render

This is a Portuguese name; the first family name is de Assis and the second is Moreira. The name can be shortened to Ronaldo Moreira.

or better still

This is a Portuguese name; the maternal family name is de Assis and the paternal one is Moreira. The name can be shortened to Ronaldo Moreira.

Nopes, that’s still wrong. If this note has a purpose, it is to offer a clear and simple explanation, not to muddle matters further. And the clear and simple thing to be said is that in a Portuguese-style name (also used in Brazil etc.) regardless of the number of given names and surnames the main name is the last (main being the one used to address someone formally as Mr. or Ms. So-and-so, or to look up someone in a phone directory or some such). There’s a bunch of exceptions to this, but those can be addressed in a case-by-case basis.
(Also, and this is a pro tip: "de Assis" is not the surname, "Assis" is; "de" belongs to "Assis" as this kind of particles belong always to the next name, but they are never considered for alpha sorting not are used when the name is given standalone.)

Proposal to use footnote instead of hatnote

I started a discussion here as I believe these types of templates would be less jarring if they appeared as a supplementary footnote rather than a "warning" above the lead. —Designate (talk) 19:05, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

FWIW, I agree. Tuvalkin (talk) 22:21, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
