Template talk:Rugby League Playing Nations links

I think Papua is probably more "Pacific" than Asia. Perhaps Oceania (that's what it says on the actualk PNG atricle) is the best bet, so we should rename this section? Grinner 09:59, 30 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

This needs a lot of work

edit

This tempate needs a lot of work. To claim some countries like Germany and Japan are "Rugby League playing nations" is boarding on ludicrous and seems to be nothing more than attempt to pass League off as an international sport. According to Rugby_league_in_Germany there are "100" players. Having lived in Japan, I can say that Rugby is a minor sport and Rugby League is unknown. Portugal_national_rugby_league_team says League is not played in Portugal, while at Rugby_league_in_Greece "Rugby league has never been played in Greece". Rugby_league_in_Italy "Today, the teams are made up mostly, if not by all, Italians living abroad or Australians of Italian ancestry". Malta has "yet to establish domestic rugby league within Malta" The list goes on and on. I would suggest that at least 50% of the Rugby League articles could be merged into an "Amateur Rugby League teams based in Australia" Oh and for Lebanon, from the wikipedia article "The full Lebanon side remains dominated by players of Lebanese ancestry from Australia" Tancred 19:46, 25 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Agree with you on some points. Think that it should be renamed nations with representative international football teams instead of calling them rugby league playing nations. The Australian socceroos team of 73 was dominated by foreign players as have many Irish soccer teams. Such a category would be an attack on rugby league football. No they should not be merged as many of the activities are overseas and in those countries whether they are from immigrants from those nations or not.ir
Australia's national team of 74 did have a fair number of immigrants in it, but those people had migrated to Australia, and were playing for Australian domestic clubs. It is in no way comparable to Rugby League in Portugal where Rugby League is not played, yet Portugal is somehow listed as a "Rugby League Playing Nation"Tancred 21:58, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
And the Portugal thing is one of the things I agree with you on, rugby league football has not been played in Portugal since it was banned in the thirties and the clubs reaffiiliated with rugby union. But most of the others have legitimate status as international teams.
Firstly they would be called Rugby League teams, not football teams. And perhaps instead of just reverting my edits, you could work to improve this article. Tancred 10:39, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Why? You would just revert it yourself. What you are doing is not an improvement, it is more of an ignorant attack to try to diminish the sport.
Ignorant attack? I have provided evidence to support my edits as shown above. Tancred 12:31, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
No you have not. You have shown that you are ignorant and seeking to attack the international status of the sport.
You really have no idea just what you are trying to argue do you? And perhaps you could sign your comments in future? Your other usernames know how to.Tancred 17:39, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

It is unfair to ignore lump Lebanon in weith some of the more dubious nations, they are more than a national team based in Australia. Grinner 20:41, 27 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

What on earth is going with this template? I agree that a lot of these teams are dubious but can't that just be stated on the team page?

At the least the quote marks should taken away. If you want to say that the Italian team is based in Australia that's a fact but adding the quote marks is POV. GordyB16:32, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

What is going on is that an Australian soccer fan, who believes in the "world game" is attempting to attack and insult league. Just revert the vandal because the whole thing is unprecedented. The fact that he/she is a troll is clear from the fact that the only edits that are made by Tancred are at the time of an edit conflict. A soccer administrater banned the person that he/she was arguing with and so I feel it is a moral obligation that this person does not get their POV way to insult footy. I have nothing to do with the previous argument and actually have an active account under a different name. --Caesar34 10:34, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have been editing wikipedia for a coupld of years now. I would be very interested to see some proof that you have another active account. Most of your sockpuppets seem to be banned. See Wikipedia:Suspected_sock_puppets/Ehinger222_(2nd) Tancred 11:20, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have no problem removing the quote marks and will do so now. I think the big question is what is the point to this template. To me, it seems to be written to give the appearance that Rugby League is played in more countries than it is. I'm not saying how the template currently looks is how it should stay, but i don;t think countries like Portugal should be listed.Tancred 19:40, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just revert it. The guy who is trying to "improve it" is a troll. --Tenuous walker 10:06, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Humm. You make a total of 2 edits on wikpedia. One call me a vandal, the other a soccer troll. I wonder if you are posting under a new name to get around a ban?Tancred 12:42, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

User:Tancred's Place to make his case

As I have outlined above, League is not played in Portugal. It says so here According to Rugby league in Greece "Rugby league has never been played in Greece" According to Rugby league in Italy League is not played in Italy either. Rugby league in Malta states "Thus far, there is no domestic rugby league played in Malta"

The "national" teams for these countries are all based in Sydney, and are made up of Australians with heritage for each country.

I would also say that in many of the countries listed league us a very minor sport and they probably have no place on this template. (Japan and Germany spring to mind) Tancred 09:20, 11 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

From here [1], it mentions rugby league as being played in Greece among others. Either way, the whole "Australia" thing makes me feel uncomfortable. As I understand it, it is only meant to be a list of rugby league nations links. --Rugby 666 10:24, 11 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
From here [2], "Greece played the game with no less than eight local-based players, with many of them playing only their second ever game of 13-a-side football." So it is played in Greece as of now anyway, and will be more permanently s of next year "A number of plans for the Greek Rugby League have been put into place with a regular domestic competition to commence in 2007. " from [3], also backs it up as the first international played in Greece. --Rugby 666 10:26, 11 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I would be happy for them to be moved when they actually move their national team to Greece. At the moment all the contacts (including the training ground are based in Sydney. [1]. Tancred 10:33, 11 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
That is not uncommen in alot of sports to have their training in a different country. Nothing special there and not noteworthy, I thought the point you were trying to make is that only Australian immigrants play the sport, if that is not the case, than you really do not have one. --Rugby 666 10:42, 11 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Despite the absurd and specious grouping in the first place, organised rugby league is played in all those nations. Furthermore, questions of legitimacy of those nations(which are completely uncited) can be dealt with on their page. The above link mentions all of the nations that you claim do not play there. {144.132.221.157 (Talk)}

Glad to see you are back with your usual trolling rubbish. let me quote for you. [Rugby league in Greece] - 'Rugby league has never been played in Greece', [Portugal national rugby league team] - 'Rugby league is not played in Portugal', [Rugby league in Italy] - Provides no evidence at all the sport is played in Italy, [Rugby league in Malta] - Again the only references are about Italian-Australians playing the sport in Australia.Tancred 16:23, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
what are you talking about? I said your grouping was wrong, as well as your attempt to change the name from national links to playing to justify a contentious edit that has been reverted countless times. Yes I am a troll, watch out for my snarl and demand for money next time you walk over a bridge????wtf??? the link the banned user(who you obviously believe is me) mentions above indicates that football is played there. From the article "A global game

Countries where organised rugby league is played:

American Samoa, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, Cook Islands, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Fiji, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lebanon, Malta, Moldova, Morocco, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Samoa, Scotland, Serbia, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Tokelau, Tonga, Ukraine, United States, Wales, West Indies." {144.132.221.157 (Talk)}
