Parent taxon

Dyanega. Hey there. I notice you recently changed the parent taxon. Would you mind walking me through your process for figuring out it was Apomecynini, so I can be more accurate in the future? My process was to check the enwiki article Plociella and also the Wikidata entry at wikidata:Q15872228, which both said Cerambycidae. Thanks. –Novem Linguae (talk) 20:13, 27 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi. For taxonomy, it helps to be acquainted with reliable sources for the taxa in question. For example, [1], [2]. Generalized sources are not nearly as reliable, because they typically cull data from the web and a lot of the data they cull at random this way is from erroneous, incomplete, or outdated sources that are not written or maintained by specialists. Wikidata is one of the LAST places to use, as it is remarkably incomplete, and often badly outdated. GBIF is just as bad. BioLib is a little better, but not by much. I never trust tertiary sources like these that aggregate data without quality control by actual human authorities; they offer lines of evidence that can help support other sources, but are not sources in and of themselves.
