Spacing issue
editThis is what the template looks like on Chrome. There is a large amount of wasted space which means the template is much longer than it should be. I'm not sure of the cause of this, but unless it is an easy fix I would like to remove the images until a fix can be found. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:39, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
- I've applied a possible fix. It seems to work on Chrome now. Any problems on other browsers? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:49, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Template:The Boat Race → Template:The Boat Races – The template covers The Boat Race as well as the Women's Boat Race and Henley Boat Races. Whizz40 (talk) 19:32, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- Support don't see why not, it's certainly expanded beyond its original scope when I created it three years ago. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:12, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

Arms
editGiven the Cambridge Coat of Arms is no longer in the template (it looks like the file was deleted, so its removal was presumably unavoidable) should the Oxford one be removed as well? It seems odd to have one without the other? Dunarc (talk) 22:26, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, removed. The Rambling Man (talk) 05:56, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

- Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. DannyS712 (talk) 05:26, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Adding 2021 to the template
editDo we believe that 2021 needs to be added to the template when there has been no announcement that a 2021 event will take place and that no article exists for it? The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 10:48, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Whizz40, Sportsfanrob, MSGJ, and Bilorv: who are the main contributors to the template. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 10:51, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- No it's a navigational template which helps users find articles. There is no 2021 Boat Race article at this time because literally nothing is known about a 2021 Boat Race, let alone if there will even actually be one. The 2021 article was prematurely and inaccurately created, then subsequently deleted. Once sufficient reliable information can be sourced about a 2021 race, then the the article and template can be created/updated. Why not add 2022 and 2023 while we're here if we think a null 2021 link is worthwhile?? The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 10:54, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- And now Sportsfanrob has made a further pointed edit to add 2022 and 2023. I think someone should have a word with him. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 11:10, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- No - it's a navbox, so should really only have blue and redlinks. There's an argument for having the 1915 race listed, that potentially an article covering why there was no race at this time, but not one for having a WP:TOOSOON article there. The test is, if it were created, would it get deleted? With no sourcing, and no information, next year's event would be deleted. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 11:06, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Lee, yes, the article was erroneously created with false information and was deleted. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 11:10, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- No - it's too soon to write a reliably sourced article so no value in red-linking 2021 (or later) in the template at this time. 2020 has an article to be linked. Whizz40 (talk) 11:18, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- No, it shouldn't. Sportsfanrob, please use meaningful edit summaries and engage in discussion when challenged on an edit you've made. — Bilorv (talk) 12:30, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- Goodbye Everyone who tells me to stop Good Riddance I will log out. Sportsfanrob (talk) 17:32, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- That isn't the purpose of this discussion: this was all about establishing if your preference reflected the consensus. It currently doesn't but we can let this run for a week or two and see what it concludes as. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 18:12, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- Don't WP:FLOUNCE or WP:Throw your toys out of the pram Sportsfanrob. You are a good editor, but consensus isn't with you in this case. Move on to some other work instead of a threat to leave. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 10:51, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Format for races which didn't take place
editThe current usage of grey text is not good from an MOS:ACCESS perspective, nor is it helpful when at least one of the races which didn't take place (2020) actually has an article — the grey text makes it appear as if it is unlinked. As a starter suggestion:
- Remove the wartime races which weren't even prepared for (1915 to 1919, 1941 and 1942).
- Link the unofficial Second World War races (1940, 1943, 1944 and 1945) to the section of List of The Boat Race results#Unofficial wartime races and add an asterisk.
- Add an asterisk to the 2020 race.
- Add a note to the template explaining that an asterisk indicates "unofficial or cancelled"
If absolutely needed, the first bullet could be ignored and the text just left unlinked but with an asterisk. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 11:37, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- I suppose the other way to do it is to have a row specifically for events that didn't take place, or were unofficial. The grey events don't really help much. The above seems like a suitable way to handle it. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 13:26, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- I just think keeping the chronological order at the expense of an asterisk and a footnote in the template is worth it. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 18:11, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- Whichever is fine with me. Just a thought - should this be Template:The Boat Race? I realise there is more than one, but I don't think it's ever been referred to as "The Boat Races" (maybe referring to several as Boat Races between X & Y). A similar template for multiple world cups is at Template:FIFA World Cup for example. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 10:54, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
- See above (about four sections above). It was renamed "The Boat Races" for a few seasons, now it's back to the singular, there's no reason why it shouldn't be moved back. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 10:56, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Women's boat race 2015-present
editIs it worth adding links to the 2015-present Women's boat race; even if they link to the same place as the (Men's) Boat Race? AT a quick glance, one might think that the event has been stopped.
